The United Nations will launch a trust fund for cash-strapped Afghans, tapping into donor money to pay residents directly. With 40% of its GDP coming from foreign aid, Afghanistan suffered a blow after the Taliban takeover in August prompted a humiliating retreat by western powers. That compelled the World Bank, IMF and western countries to suspend payments and the American government to freeze more than $9bn in assets.

America’s National Football League reached a settlement with former players to end race-based adjustments to brain-injury testing. The league has so far paid out $821m to those who suffered cognitive impairments linked to the sport, particularly after concussions. But the tests used assumed black players had lower cognitive function to begin with, and so they received smaller pay-outs—a practice known as “race norming”.

The man charged with the murder of the British MP Sir David Amess as he was meeting his constituents last Friday has been officially named as Ali Harbi Ali. He was arrested immediately after the fatal stabbing. Mr Ali, who is also charged with terrorist offences, is a British citizen and the son of a former adviser to the Somali prime minister.

The number of Americans filing for initial unemployment benefits, a proxy for layoffs, continued to drop: there were 290,000 claims last week, the lowest level since before the pandemic began in March 2020. Given the dire labour shortage, firms are keen to keep workers, and are raising pay.

Southern African countries will send envoys to the embattled country of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland. At least one person has been killed and scores injured in recent demonstrations against the autocratic rule of King Mswati III. He has called such protests “satanic”, and on Thursday his government cut off access to Facebook.

Syria executed 24 people for starting deadly wildfires in September last year. The fires torched 59,300 acres (24,000 hectares) of land and killed three people. Despite the chilling news, global trends indicate that the use of the death penalty is declining. Amnesty International reported a 26% decrease in executions in 2020 compared with 2019.
