Amazon’s CEO Says Workforce Will Shrink Thanks to AI (WSJ. 20250617)
Amazon's CEO said today increasing use of artificial intelligence will eliminate the need for certain jobs. In a note to employees, Andy Jassy said Amazon's workforce will shrink in the next few years, but he didn't specify by how much. Jassy called AI a once-in-a-lifetime technological change that's already altering how Amazon deals with consumers, businesses, and its own operations. People familiar with the matter told The Journal that Amazon doesn't expect mass layoffs in the near future. They said headcount will likely happen largely through attrition. Elsewhere, The Journal exclusively reports Robinhood is rolling out new features with the aim of increasing customer loyalty and ultimately dominating the retail trading market. One new tool will allow users to preview simulated returns before they execute an options trade, another will allow advanced charting capabilities on mobile devices. And finally, Oracle today unveiled a new program aimed at helping small technology companies more easily sell their tech to the Department of Defense. The Oracle Defense Ecosystem, as it's dubbed, will have fewer than a dozen companies to start. Those participating companies, which include AI and quantum security firms, will have access to Oracle's resources and expertise in navigating the Pentagon's procurement process. Ultimately, Oracle aims to embed its own cloud platform into the Defense Department and encourage startups to build on it.
