White House Officials Discussing 10% Stake in Intel (20250818)
Trump administration officials are discussing taking a 10% stake in Intel. The move would be part of a government effort to rescue the embattled chipmaker, and bolster semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. That's according to people briefed on the talks. The structure in terms of the equity investment haven't been finalized. One option under consideration is converting some of the money that Intel was slated to receive from the 2022 Chips Act into an equity stake. Plus cases of CEO deepfakes are on the rise. Driven by artificial intelligence, scammers are increasingly using voice and video impersonations of company executives to fool workers into handing over millions of dollars, critical data, and other business assets. Cybersecurity experts say the emergence of readily available low-cost AI language and image models are making the attack easier to pull off and wider spread. In the U.S, there were more than 105,000 deepfake-related attacks last year, or roughly an attack every five minutes. That's a massive increase from 2023 according to Brian Long, CEO of OpenAI backed cybersecurity firm, Adaptive Security. Finally, Taiwan shares hit a new record high. The Benchmark Index rallied over easing trade tensions and major tech players reporting solid earnings results. The U.S. announced a 20% tariff on imports from Taiwan ahead of an August deadline, down from the original 32%. Taiwan's government has said that negotiations are ongoing and that the final rate could be lower. Despite that trade turbulence, Taiwan's statistics office has raised its 2025 gross domestic product growth forecast, citing strong demand for AI and emerging technology applications.
