Waymo Is Headed to the Big Apple (WSJ. 20250822)
Waymo is headed to New York City. The self-driving car company owned by Google Parent Alphabet received a permit to begin testing up to eight autonomous vehicles in parts of Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn until late September. That's according to Mayor Eric Adams and the New York City Transportation Department earlier today. The company will be able to apply for an extension once its initial pilot testing period ends. New York City has hosted self-driving vehicles before. Mobileye, a self-driving car company owned by Intel, began testing its vehicles in New York City in 2021, though the company suspended its testing the following year. Plus, TikTok plans to lay off hundreds of workers in the UK. The move comes as the video platform turns to artificial intelligence to automate content moderation. Social media companies built teams to police online content in recent years, but lately some have started to scale back those efforts. TikTok, owned by China-based ByteDance, said the layoffs are part of a global restructuring that also affects its operations in South and Southeast Asia. Finally, yesterday we told you about Major League Baseball nearly reaching a deal with NBCUniversal and Netflix. Now we're adding Disney's ESPN to the mix. According to people familiar with the matter, the two are in advanced talks for a three-year deal worth around $1.65 billion. As part of the agreement, the MLB.tv streaming service would be incorporated into ESPN's streaming service. But sources say the deal hasn't been completed yet and so the terms could change.
