U.S. prosecutors have indicted a former executive of medical device manufacturer ExThera Medical on charges of promoting and inducing terminally ill cancer patients to undergo ineffective blood filtration therapy, and intentionally concealing patient deaths that occurred during treatment from government authorities.
Victims traveled as far as Antigua in the Caribbean to receive the expensive treatment, costing $45,000 per session, but two died immediately after treatment.
The former executive charged agreed to plead guilty and faces up to three years in prison. ExThera has agreed to pay a criminal penalty of $750,000 (earmarked for the victims' families) and to forfeit $5.7 million to the government, which is considered criminal proceeds.
