A federal court has ruled that Trump’s executive order suspending federal funding to public broadcasters NPR and PBS violates the First Amendment.
The order is unconstitutional because Trump suspended funding on the grounds that the two networks cover news from a liberal perspective.
The First Amendment does not permit retaliatory actions based on differences in perspective.
However, this ruling has little effect as Congress passed a bill to cut $500 million in funding to CPS, which provides funding to NPR and PBS, following the executive order.
The CPS shut down after Congress voted to claw back the fund, and NPR and CBS sought other revenue sources.
However, the ruling may have an effect on future congressional funding allocations for public broadcasters and may help reinstate funding to NPR and PBS.
The White House has not issued a statement following this ruling; NPR stated that the decision reaffirmed the freedom of a free and independent press, while PBS noted that Trump’s executive order imposed textbook unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination.
