Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Temple by the Sea, Busan

Internship report by Jake

Situated on the coast of Busan, Haedong Yonggunsa Temple or better known as Temple by the Sea offers one of the three most important Buddhist temples that is not in the mountains.

Founded by the great monk Naong in the 1300s, and unfortunately destroyed by fire due to the Japanese invasion. The monk Ungang of Tongdo rebuilt the temple in the early 1930s. The Haedong Yonggungsa Temple has the following saying: "At least one of your wishes will be answered here through your heartful prayers."

Reconstructed in 1970, the key focus was to pay careful attention to the traditional colors that were used in such structures. There is a saying that goes that the Great Goddess Buddha of mercy lives alone in the sea and appears to be on the back of a dragon which is the reason why it is considered one of the 3 sacred places related to the Goddess Buddha.

There are various spots where you are able to pray and where you can choose a strap, put ₩5000 in the collecting box, write down your wishes, and put it behind the display cabinet to have it answered by your heartful prayers.

Becoming a popular tourist attraction as well as people coming to pray Temple by the Sea is definitely a sight not to miss when you are in Busan.

It is recommended to visit the temple around sunrise as that is the best time to view the temple's beauty. There is also a cafe where you can have a beautiful view of the ocean. There are various ways of reaching the temple.

In our experience, one of the easiest ways to get to Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is by taking Subway Line 2 and going to Jangsan station, the last stop of line 2. From there you can take the bus however, it is a bit of a hassle as the bus times are not correctly displayed on navigation applications and you might end up waiting for way longer than needed.

The Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is open all year round, completely free and usually, 1:30 to 2 hours is enough to see everything.
