Give Them Something to Eat
마태복음 14장 16절 : 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. "그들이 물러갈 필요가 없다. 너희가 그들에게 먹을 것을 주어라."
오병이어의 기적이 일어나기 직전, 예수님은 제자들에게 말씀하십니다.
“그들을 보낼 것 없다. 너희가 먹을 것을 주어라.”
제자들이 얼마나 당황했을지는 짐작하고도 남습니다. 그러나 이 장면은 사람들에게 식사를 제공하라는 요청이라기 보다는 지금까지 걸어온 제자들의 길을 되돌아보게 하는 물음으로 읽어야 할 것 같습니다.
예수님은 이 사건 직전에 제자들에게 능력을 주셔서 병자를 고치고 귀신을 쫓게 하셨습니다. 제자들은 곳곳을 다니며 실제로 기적을 행했고 돌아와서는 그 모든 일을 예수님께 낱낱이 보고했습니다. 제자들에게는 능력이 없었던 것도 아니고, 경험이 없었던 것도 아니며, 예수님을 향한 믿음이 없었던 것도 아니었습니다.
그러므로 “너희가 먹을 것을 주어라”하신 말씀은 지시가 아니라 받은 은혜를 실제로 흘려보내라는 도전이었던 것입니다. 기적은 주어진 것을 소비하는 사건이 아니라 받은 것을 타인에게 전하는 사역으로 이어져야 합니다. 바로 이 지점에서 예수님께서 제자들의 결단을 요구하고 계시는 것입니다.
천지를 창조하신 분께서 왜 굳이 사람의 손을 빌려 일을 이루시는지 그 역설은 이해하기 어렵습니다. 그러나 하나님의 역사는 언제나 인간의 순종을 통로 삼아 흘러갑니다. 이는 전능하신 하나님께서 스스로 선택하신 방식이며 인간을 단순한 수혜자가 아니라 하나님의 동역자로 세우신 뜻이기도 합니다.
이후 예수님께서 “너희가 기적을 깨달아서가 아니라 배가 불러서 나를 따르는구나”라고 하신 말씀도 같은 맥락에 있습니다. 예수님께서 보이신 기적의 본질은 욕구 충족에 있지 않습니다. 기적은 욕구충족 후 '아, 좋았다'하고 우리를 멈추게 하는 결말이 아니라 더 깊은 곳으로 나아가게 하는 초대입니다. 예수님의 기적은 늘 그 다음을 향한, 그 너머를 향한 부르심이었습니다.
저에게는 지금 제가 서 있는 이 자리가 곧 부르심의 자리입니다. 지금 이 순간이 하나님의 기적이 일어나는 시간입니다. 저는 그 부르심에 답하며, 불러주신 은혜에 감사하고, 제가 만난 하나님을 기쁨으로 나누며 살아가기를 원합니다.
Matthew 14:16 : Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."
Just before the miracle of the five loaves and two fish, Jesus spoke these words to His disciples :
"They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."
We can imagine how unsettled the disciples must have felt. Yet this scene is more than a call to provide a meal, it is a question that makes them reflect on the path they had already walked with Him.
Not long before this moment, Jesus had given His disciples authority to heal the sick and cast out demons. They went out, performed miracles in His name, and returned to report everything they had done. They were not lacking in power, nor in experience, nor even in faith toward their Teacher.
So when Jesus said, "You give them something to eat," it was not simply an instruction but a challenge, to let the grace they had received flow outward to others. A miracle is not about consuming what is given, but about passing on what has been entrusted. Here, Jesus was calling His disciples to a decisive step.
It is difficult to grasp why the Creator of heaven and earth would choose to work through human hands. Yet God’s work always moves through human obedience. This is the way He has chosen: not to leave us as mere recipients, but to make us His co-workers.
Later, when Jesus said, "You follow Me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate your fill," He was pointing to the same truth. The essence of His miracles was never the satisfaction of hunger or need. They were not endings that leave us saying, "That was good," but invitations to go deeper and further. Every miracle of Jesus was always a call toward what lies beyond.
For me, the place where I now stand is itself a place of calling. This present moment is the time when God’s miracle is at work. I want to answer that call with gratitude, to share the God I have encountered with joy, and to live as one through whom His grace flows.
