In Time (2011)

Prologue

The movie 'In Time' depicts a dystopian society where 'Time' becomes the currency and the rich can live an eternal life whereas the poor live day by day: the people are genetically engineered to stop aging on the 25th year and are given one year in which they have to keep earn Time to live as they instantly die when the timer on their forearm indicating their remaining time reaches zero.

Part I: The Plot

The plot takes off when Will's mother dies from the time out on the day Will received over 100 years from a rich man Henry Hamilton and waiting for his mother to go to New Greenwich with him. Because of the increased bus price, she couldn't ride a bus but run to home when she only had 1 hour and a half. The distance to home was 2 hours. This dramatic death scene emphasizes the catastrophic condition underprivileged people have to go through in their daily lives, engaging with the audience and establishing pathos in their minds. The death of Will's mother thus becomes the motive for Will to change the system and start his journey of vengeance. I think the reason why this scene is extremely impressive and remarkable is that we all have once in our lives experienced hurrying. The fact that she immediately starts to run without even having time to feel despondent or mad delivers the urgency and pressingness to the audience. Another thing to think about is the manner of the bus driver who did not take Will's mother when she told him about her situation and begged for the ride. Why didn't he let her take the bus? What social factors made him determine such a decision?

Part II: Terminology

A really interesting part of this movie is that extant words, casual even, are employed.

Time difference means the gap between rich and poor.

Time zones are the district of different levels of wealth.

The New Greenwich is the richest distirct where all the rich people enjoy their eternal lives. This directly implies to the Royal Observatory of Greenwich in London, the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

Time Keepers are the police who manage and control the times exchanged or transported.

Minute men are small group of criminals in the poor district who steals time by killing them and extending their lifespan.

Along with these terms, there are also lots of double-meaning quotes related to time. Furthermore, the title of the movie 'In Time' could mean that the whole society is in the hand of 'Time' or that the contemporary capitalistic system will have similar repercussions at the end of the day as 'in time' is synonymous with 'eventually'.

Part III: Quotes

Begining of the move.

Henry Hamilton : How old are you? In real time?
Will Salas : 28.
H: I'm 105.
W : Good for you. You won't see 106, you have too many more nights like tonight.
H: You are right. But the day comes when you've had enough. Your mind can be spent, even if your body's not. We want to die. We need to.
W: That's your problem? You've been alive too long? You ever known anyone who's died?
H: For a few to be immortal, many must die.
W: What the hell is that supposed to mean?
H: You really don't know, do you? Everyone can't live forever. Where would we put them? Why do you think there are time zones? Why do you think taxes and prices go up the same day in the ghetto? The cost of living keeps rising to make sure people keep dying. How else could there be men with a million years while most live day to day? But the truth is... there's more than enough. No one has to die before their time. If you had as much time as I have on that clock, what would you do with it?
W: I'd stop watching it. I can tell you one thing. If I had all that time, I sure as hell wouldn't waste it.

End of the movie.

Philippe Weis: You might upset the balance for a generation, two. But don't fool yourself. In the end, nothing will change. Because everyone wants to live forever. They all think they have a chance at immortality, even though all the evidence is against it. They all think they will be the exception. But the truth is, for a few to be immortal, many must die.
Will Salas: [points a gun at Philippe] No one should be immortal, if even one person has to die.

Epilogue

The interpretation of the narrative is dependent on the individual audience yet I believe the movie doesn't only highlight the heroic aspect of the protagonist distributing the time to the impoverished people as Borel, best friend of Will, is portrayed to be dead from alcohol after receiving 10 years from Will and the final scene of great migration of people heading to the New Greenwich after getting money appears ominous to me.
