Chapter 5. Advice from a caterpillar

Who are you ? said the Caterpillar. This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, 'I-I hardly know, sir, just at present- at leas I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then." 넌 누구냐? 애벌래가 말했다. 이것은 대화를 열기에 참 좋은 시작은 아니었다. 앨리스는 하지만 수줍게 말했다. " 저는....저는 잘 모르겠어요. 지금은,,적어도 내가 오늘 아침 일어났을때 내가 누구였는지는 아는데 그때부터 계속 바뀌고 있거든요 "

5. You are old, father william : 이 싯구는 빅토리아 시대 어린이들에게 잘 알려진 시이며, 원문은 " 노인의 편안함과 그가 어떻게 그편안함을 얻엇는지" 라는 로버트 수데이의 1799년 시를 패러디 한 시이다.
Carroll's "You are Old, Father William" is a parody of a well-known Victorian children's poem, "The Old Man's Comforts and How He Gained Them" by Robert Southey, first published in 1799.
That is no said right, said the Caterpillar. 'Not quite right, I am afraid, said Alice ,timidly ; 'some of the words have got altered" "It is wrong from beginning to end, said the Caterpillar decidedly, and there was silence for some minutes. 틀렸잖아. 애벌레가 말했다. 죄송해요 잘 안맞아요. 몇몇 단어가 바뀐거같애요. "처음부터 끝까지 다 틀렸어" 애벌레가 단호하게 말했고, 몇분간 정적이 흘렀다.

" 버섯의..." 애벌레는 마치 앨리스가 큰소리로 물어봤던 것처러 대담했다. 그리고 잠시후 애벌레는 사라졌다.

~ ' Serpent , I say again !" repeated the Pigeon, but in a more subdued tone and added with a kind of sob, I've tried every way and nothing seems to suit them ! 뱀이다 다시말해도 뱀이야! 비둘기가 되풀이했다. 하지만 이번에는 좀 누그러진 톤으로 흐느낌도 섞어서 말했다. 온갖 방법을 시도했지만 '뱀'밖에는 적당한 말이 없는거같아요"
16. contempt : 경멸, 무시
I-I am a little girl, said Alice, rather doubtfully, as she remembered the number of changes she had gone through that day. 'A likely story indeed' said the Pigeon in a tone of the deepest contempt. 'I 've seen a good many little girls in my time, but never one with such a neck as that! No, no ! You 're a serpent ; and there is no use denying it. 난 어린 소녀야, 앨리스는 지레 의심스럽게 말했다 왜냐하면 그날은 너무 많은 변화를 겪었기 때문이다. ' 아주 그럴듯한 스토리네' 비둘기는 굉장히 경멸스러운 톤으로 말했다. '내가 착한 소녀들을 그동안 많이 만나봤어. 근데 그렇게 목이 긴 소녀는 한번도 없었어. 말도 안돼, 아니야, 너는 뱀이야. 그리고 거부해봤자 소용없어
17. out of one's wit : 어쩔줄 모르는
Whoever lives there, thought Alice, it'll never do o come upon them this size; why, I should froghten them out of their wits! 그집에 누가살든 이 사이즈로는 그들을 만날수 없어, 왜냐면, 내가 그들을 놀래켜 어쩔줄 몰라하게 만들거라서.
챕터 감상 : 5장에서 만난 애벌레는 변화의 상징이다. 애벌레이지만 변태를 앞둔 시점에서는 자신의 삶을 접어야 하는 삶을 다한 노인의 입장이다. 앨리스에게 '너는 누구냐' 라고 묻지만, 몸의 크기의 변화를 경험하고 있는 앨리스는 자신이 누군지 알지 못하고 설명도 못하겠다고 한다. 애벌레는 지금의 3인치 몸크기에 적응해 보라고 , 시간이 필요할 뿐이라고 한다. 그리고 사라지면서 '한쪽은 커지로 한쪽은 작아진다'는 말을 남긴다. 무엇의 한쪽을 말하냐고 앨리스가 묻기 전까지는 ' 한편으로는 성장하지만 다른 한편으로는 퇴보한다' 는 말을 남기고 싶었는지도 모른다. 어른들은 몸이 커지지만 몸이 커진 만큼 제자리에서 성숙하지 못한 내면은 상대적으로 퇴보해 보이기 때문이다. 애벌레처럼 자신을 죽이고 새로운 모습으로 변태하는 과정을 겪기 전까지는 우리는 끊임없이 겉과 속이 성장했다가 퇴보했다가를 반복하며 살아가고 있는게 아닐까? 그건 전혀 이상한 일이 아니다.
