전체주의 국가 내전의 추방자들 ‘예언자의 노래’ 부커상 수상
전체주의 국가들에서 자행되는 내전에 추방자들에 대한 국제적 무관심을 그린 ‘예언자의 노래’가 부커상 수상작으로 결정됐다.
영국과 오랜 분쟁지역인 아일랜드의 작가 폴 린치(Paul Lynch) 다섯 번째 작품인 <예언자의 노래(Prophet Song)>가 27일 수상작으로 발표됐다.
부커상 심사위원장 에시 에두얀(Esi Edugyan, 소설가)는 기자회견으로 "<예언자의 노래>가 이스라엘-하마스 전쟁을 포함한 현대의 위기에 반향을 일으켰지만, 이 소설은 오로지 문학적 가치만으로 승리했다“며 "이것은 감성적인 스토리텔링으로 용기있고 용감한 것의 승리이다"고 밝혔다.
에두얀 심사위원장은 “심사위원들이 6시간의 토론에도 만장일치 결정을 내리지 못했다”며 “그럼에도 불구하고 패널들은 <예언자의 노래>에 대해 ‘현재 우리 시대의 사회적, 정치적 불안을 포착’하는 가치 있는 수상작이라고 느꼈다”고 수상작 결정 이유를 밝혔다.
수상자로 결정된 풀 린치는 이번 수상작인 <예언자의 노래> 작품을 쓰기 시작했을 때, “시리아의 오랜 내전과 분쟁을 피해 도망친 사람들에 대한 서방의 명백한 무관심에 대해 생각하고 있었다”고 말했다.
영화 평론가 출신인 린치(46)는 2013년 19세기를 배경으로 한 데뷔작품인 <아침의 붉은 하늘>에서 한 남자를 살해한 뒤 미국으로 도망친 아일랜드인의 이야기를 다뤘다.
수상작인 <예언자의 노래>는 출판사 ‘그로브 애틀랜틱’이 북미에서 출간할 예정이다.
독립출판사인 그로브 애틀랜틱의 홈페이지에는 “2023년 부커상 최종 후보에 오른 예언자 노래(Prophet Song)는 권위주의로 치닫는 아일랜드에 대한 무섭고 긴장감 넘치는 비전을 보여준다”고 썼다.
폴 린치(Paul Lynch)에 대해 애틀랜틱 출판사는 소설 <아침의 붉은 하늘(Red Sky in Morning)>, <검은 눈(The Black Snow)>, <그레이스(Grace)>, <바다 너머(Beyond the Sea)>를 썼고, <그레이스>가 2018년 케리 그룹 아일랜드 소설상을 수상하고 2018년 월터 스콧 역사소설상과 윌리엄 사로얀 국제문학상 최종 후보에도 올랐다고 밝혔다.

부커상은 5만파운드(63,000달러)의 상금이 수여되며 매년 영어로 쓰여지고 영국이나 아일랜드에서 출판된 최고의 소설에 수여된다.
1969년에 제정된 이 상은 힐러리 맨텔(Hilary Mantel), 살만 루시디(Salman Rushdie), 마거릿 애트우드(Margaret Atwood)와 같은 문학계의 거물들이 포함됐다.

‘Prophet Song’ by exiles from civil war in a totalitarian state wins the Booker Prize
‘Prophet Song', which depicts international indifference toward exiles from civil wars in totalitarian countries, has been selected as the winner of the Booker Prize.
<Prophet Song>, the fifth work by Paul Lynch, a writer from Ireland, a region in long-standing conflict with Britain, was announced as the winner on the 27th.
Booker Prize jury chairman Esi Edugyan (novelist) said at a press conference, "Although The Song of the Prophet resonated with contemporary crises, including the Israel-Hamas war, the novel won solely on its literary merits." “This is a triumph of courage and bravery through emotional storytelling.”

Lynch, 46, a former film critic, made his 2013 debut feature Red Sky in the Morning, set in the 19th century and telling the story of an Irishman who flees to the United States after murdering a man.

The Booker Prize carries a prize of 50,000 pounds ($63,000) and is awarded annually to the best novel written in English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland.
