인텔이 중국 대만 집중 해소책으로 칩 공장 베트남 ‘확장’

인텔이 칩에 대한 과도한 중국 대만 집중력 해소책으로 칩 테스트 포장 공장을 베트남에서 ‘확장’하며 칩의 새 강자로 부각되고 있다.

미국 인텔이 베트남에 반도체 칩 테스트와 포장 공장을 확장하기 위해 기존 15억 달러에서 10억 달러 추가 투자를 보인다고 로이터가 10일 보도했다.

인텔이 추진 중인 베트남 남부 상업 허브에 있는 칩 패키징 및 테스트 공장은 인텔의 세계 최대 규모이며, 2021년 말 말레이시아에 새로운 칩 패키징 및 테스트 공장을 건설하기 위해 70 억 달러 이상 투자 계획을 발표했었다.

로이터는 관계자를 인용해 말레이시아 시설은 2024년에 생산을 시작할 것이며 기존의 인텔 공장은 중국과 미국에 테스트 및 패키징 시설을 보유하고 있어 베트남 말레이시아로 집중적 투자 이전을 보인다고 밝혔다.

미국 관련 기업 임원은 로이터에 “베트남의 가장 큰 기회는 칩 조립 부문에서 중국과 대만의 생산 능력의 ‘과잉 집중’ 감소를 위한 업계의 요구 충족”이라며 “칩 설계에는 더 적은 자본과 더 많은 숙련 된 노동자가 필요하며 베트남도 진출하고 있고 미국 거대 기업 Synopsys가 베트남에서 사업을 운영하고 FPT 및 국영 Viettel을 포함한 현지 기업이 빠르게 확장되고 있다”고 말했다.

소식통 중 한 명은 로이터에 “미국 칩 거인은 이미 공장이 위치한 여분의 토지를 베트남에 보유하고 있으며 베트남에서의 확장은 단일 국가 또는 공장에 크게 의존함으로써 발생하는 공급 중단을 더 잘 관리하는 데 도움이 될 것”이라며 “인텔이 베트남 투자를 숙고하면서 해외 확장이 국내에서 칩 생산을 늘리려는 워싱턴에 적대적 움직임으로 간주되지 않도록 하고 있다”고 말했다.

베트남 정부는 칩 제조 산업 확장에 적극적으로 추진 중이며, 조립 테스트와 포장의 세 가지 주요 부문 모두에서 외국 기업 유치를 강화하고 있다.

삼성전자는 지난해 말 북부 하노이에 칩과 전자 분야의 연구 시설을 열었고 반도체 포장 공장을 보유하고 있다.

Intel is emerging as a new powerhouse in chips by ‘expanding’ its chip test packaging plant in Vietnam as a solution to its excessive concentration in China and Taiwan on chips.

Reuters reported on the 10th that Intel is investing an additional $1 billion from the existing $1.5 billion to expand its semiconductor chip testing and packaging plant in Vietnam.

The chip packaging and test plant in the commercial hub in southern Vietnam, which Intel is promoting, is Intel's largest in the world, and announced plans to invest more than $7 billion to build a new chip packaging and test plant in Malaysia by the end of 2021.

Reuters, citing officials, said the Malaysian facility will start production in 2024, and Intel's existing factories have testing and packaging facilities in China and the United States, indicating an intensive investment move to Vietnam and Malaysia.

An executive from a US-related company told Reuters that "Vietnam's biggest opportunity is to meet the industry's demand for reducing 'overconcentration' of China and Taiwan's capacity in chip assembly." Workers are needed, Vietnam is also making inroads, American giant Synopsys operates in Vietnam, and local companies, including FPT and state-owned Viettel, are expanding rapidly.”

One of the sources told Reuters, “The American chip giant already has extra land in Vietnam where its factories are located, and expansion in Vietnam will help it better manage supply disruptions caused by its heavy reliance on a single country or factory. “As Intel contemplates investing in Vietnam, it is making sure that its overseas expansion is not viewed as a hostile move by Washington to increase chip production domestically,” he said.

The Vietnamese government is aggressively pursuing the expansion of its chip manufacturing industry and is stepping up efforts to attract foreign companies in all three major sectors of assembly testing and packaging.

Samsung Electronics opened a chip and electronics research facility in northern Hanoi at the end of last year and has a semiconductor packaging plant.
