한국식 영어 '콩글리시'도 좋아요

한국식 영어 만들어내는 창의력 발휘할 때

한국식 영어를 당당히 만들어내자

한국사람이 쓰는 정통이 아닌 영어를 '콩글리시'로 지칭한다. 그런데 우리 스스로가 콩글리시를 부정적 의미로 일컬어서야 되겠는가? 더욱이 콩글리시를 비문법적인 엉터리 영어라는 의미의 ‘브로큰 잉글리시’(broken English)라고 매도해야겠는가?

콩글리시를 주창한다고 해서 정통영어를 배척하자는 것은 아니다. 결국은 우리도 일상생활에서 일본식 영어(재플리시)를 외래어로 많이 쓰고 있다. 이제는 한국식 영어를 콩글리시라 폄하하는 우리의 패러다임부터 바꿀 필요가 있다.

이제는 우리 언어 감각에 맞춘 영어를 개발해서 미국이나 영국의 영어사전에도 올리고 원어민들도 그것을 존중하게 하는 당당함을 갖도록 노력해 나가자. 이미 많은 중국어나 일본어 단어들이 영어에 흘러들어가 외래어로 정착된 경우가 있다. 이러한 외래어들은 비즈니스, 예술, 복식, 정치, 행정, 종교, 무예 등 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 원어민 사전에도 보란 듯이 등재되어 있다.

이에 비해 한국어가 영어 외래어로 채택된 비율은 미미하다. ‘Chaebol’(재벌), ‘HapKido’(합기도), ‘Taekwondo’(태권도), ‘Bibimbap’(비빔밥), ‘Bulgog’(불고기), ‘Galbi’(갈비), ‘Kimchi’(김치), ‘Kimbap’(김밥), ‘Soju’(소주), ‘Hanbok’(한복), ‘Chobo’(초보), ‘Gosu’(고수) , ‘Kisaeng’(기생), ‘Manhwa’(만화) 등 영어로는 표현하기 어려운 우리의 복식이나 전통 무예와 같은 고유 명칭에 국한돼 있다.

영어의 “정통” “정통”을 외치며 우리가 익숙한 미국식 영어만 고집하는 입장에서는 필리핀 영어도 브로큰 잉글리시라고 하는 경우도 있다. 그런데 오히려 필리핀 사람들은 자기들이 만든 영어를 원어민들이 이해하라고 요구하고 있다.

필리핀 사람들은 미국 영어의 숙어인 “He has butterflies in his stomach”(그는 긴장하고 있어요)를 “He has a mouse in his chest"라고 자기 방식대로 표현하고 있다. 그러면서 그들이 쓰는 영어는 자신들의 문화를 표현하는 자기 방식의 언어라고 말하고 있다.

지금 한국은 모든 분야에서 세계 상위권에 들어 있다. 그러나 언어 경쟁력 부문에서는 하위권에 처져 있다. 이제는 정통 영어 경쟁력에서도 그렇지만 글로비시로 편입시킬 수 있는 한국식 영어를 만들어내는 창의력도 발휘해야 할 때다.

일상 사용하는 콩글리시의 현주소

콩글리시는 분명 국제적으로 통용되는 영어는 아니지만 한국어 어휘 체계 속에서 사용되고 있는 영어임에는 틀림없다. 어떤 콩글리시 단어나 표현은 영어나 다른 유럽의 언어들을 바탕으로 한국에서 만들어졌으나 한국을 벗어나서는 쓰이지 않는다.

그런 콩글리시를 잘못된 영어라 할 수도 없으며 사투리 영어라 단정할 수도 없다. 단지 한국어 어휘 테두리 내에서 만들어졌을 뿐이다. 그렇기 때문에 콩글리시는 영어이지만 한국 사람만이 이해하는 영어이지 외국인은 알아차릴 수 없는 말이다. 그래서 엉터리 영어라고 하는지도 모른다.

그런데 때때로 우리는 콩글리시가 외국인도 이해하는 국제 통용어로 잘 못 생각하는 경우가 있다. 그래서 외국인에게 영어로 소통 할 때 콩글리시를 쓰는 오류를 범하기도 한다. 그럼 한국어로 쓰이고 있는 영어, 콩글리시는 어떤 것들이 있는지 대표적인 것들을 정리해 본다. ('*' 표시는 콩글리시이면서 동시에 일본식 영어이기도 하다.)
