President Lee Jae Myung has arrived in Türkiye for a two-day state visit there. On his way to Ankara, the President spoke with reporters about his trip so far and what to expect from his summit with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan later today. Our Presidential Office correspondent Song Yoo-jin has our top story tonight. The last stop of President Lee Jae Myung's 10-day, four-nation trip is Türkiye, widely known in South Korea as a "brother country bound by blood."

"As you know, Türkiye sent the fourth-largest number of troops during the Korean War, even before the two countries had established diplomatic ties." Speaking to reporters aboard the presidential jet en route to Ankara, Lee said he expects Monday's summit with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to strengthen South Korea and Türkiye's Strategic Partnership in defense, nuclear energy, and culture. "Türkiye is highly interested in defense and the defense industry, and since this is also an area of strength for South Korea, cooperation is certainly possible."

In a written interview with Türkiye's state-run Anadolu news agency published on Sunday, President Lee expressed confidence that Seoul and Ankara can expand their defense partnership into next-generation technologies. One possibility, he said, is integrating Türkiye's world-leading unmanned systems with South Korea's advanced conventional platforms such as tanks, artillery, and naval vessels.

When asked whether progress could be made on Korea Electric Power Corporation's bid to participate in Türkiye's Sinop Nuclear Power Plant project, President Lee said that, while it is difficult to predict the outcome, he will work to convey the competitiveness of Korea's nuclear power technology to his Turkish counterpart. The South Korean president also highlighted cultural exchange as another key area to watch during his two-day state visit. "Türkiye has a highly developed culture and tourism industry.

South Korea also plans to invest heavily in content, so cooperation in the cultural and tourism sectors is very possible." As President Lee pointed to his state visit to the UAE as the biggest achievement of this trip, in which Seoul and Abu Dhabi signed multiple MOUs across AI, defense, and energy, attention is on whether his visit to Türkiye will yield similarly meaningful results.
