Hello and thanks for joining us on Arirang News. Rival parties here in South Korea have reached a last-minute deal on next year's national budget and agreed to pass it through the National Assembly later Tuesday afternoon. The ruling Democratic Party and the main opposition People Power Party agreed to cut 4-point-3 trillion Korean won, or around 3 billion dollars, from the government's proposal and reallocate the same amount to other programs leaving the total budget unchanged from the initial plan.

This marks the first time in five years that lawmakers have approved an annual budget bill within the legal deadline. They decided to keep the proposed funding levels for key initiatives of the Lee administration, including local gift certificate programs but agreed to make cuts in areas such as AI-related projects and policy funds.
