President Lee vows rewards for border region residents enduring "special sacrifices"

President Lee Jae Myung was in Gangwon-do Province today for one of his signature town-hall meetings. He vowed compensation for people in the border region who have had to endure sacrifices, and promised to ease regulations, which have been in place for military purposes, to promote culture and tourism. Here's our Senior Presidential Office correspondent Yoon Jung-min.

Ensuring a reward for those who made "special sacrifices." That was a promise according to President Lee Jae Myung, who was in the border area of Gangwon-do Province on Friday for one of his hallmark town-hall meetings. "There will be no way to fully compensate the border regions, such as Gangwon-do, that have had to endure special sacrifices, but I will make sure that no one feels they are being unfairly treated."

The lives of people in the border regions have often been affected by military restrictions and politics for a long time, especially at a time when inter-Korean ties hit lows, often paired with military tension. As President Lee revisited the need to shift away from a system too heavily concentrated on the capital, and towards balanced regional development, a roadmap was laid out to transform the region into a key pillar for culture and tourism.

"I suggest that under the concept of peace, we link the northern parts of Gangwon-do involving Cherwon, Hwacheon, Yanggu, Inje and Goseong and create a peace tourism belt." He was referring to a tourism project centered on counties near the DMZ, for which restrictions are expected to be eased in areas that have been off-limits for military purposes, particularly areas north of the civilian control line. "We will review easing the regulations and try to solve the problems that the people and farmers in the region are facing."

"It looks like lifting the military facility protection zone is key for Gangwon-do. If you ask to what extent, I would suggest lifting all restrictions but those necessary." On top of that, the culture ministry aims to establish a K-pop concert hall in Sokcho that can accommodate an audience of 20-thousand, while creating a marine leisure sports center in Yangyang.
