사랑에 생존이 걸렸다면 우리는 어떤 선택을 우위에 둘 수 있을까. 이 인상적인 소재의 영화를 마주하고서 감독의 인터뷰를 찾아보았다.

“It’s about exposing aspects of human life and situations and thoughts that you have.”

“Hopefully people watching will start thinking themselves about those things and come up with their own answers. Whatever we have observed in our behaviour and the way we have constructed this world, we want to make people wonder whether all of those things are true.”

“We wanted to do something about a relationship and couples and the way people view them,”

“It wasn’t one particular thing that inspired us.”

이 영화에 대한 그의 인터뷰 내용을 보면, 감독은 마치 에세이 같은 픽션을 만들고 싶어하는 사람 같다. 철학적인 다이얼로그를 영상에 심어준다고 해야할까. 어떠한 기교도 없이 이토록 자연스러운 흐름으로 촬영했다는 것이 놀랍다. 장르가 모호한 영화의 시작은 엔딩에 가까워질수록 사람과의 관계에 집중된다. 여기에는 반드시 어떠한 상황과 대가가 존재한다. 엔딩에 닿았을 때는 영화에 대한 느낌이 굉장히 주관적으로 치우치게 되었다. 마치 감독의 의도에 휘말려버린 것처럼. 데이비드를 이해할 것만 같았다.
