[한국은 망한다 - 01]
책 머리에
“망한다는 말을 쓰지 않을 수 없었던 이유”
이 책의 제목을 처음 본 사람은 분명 당혹스러울 것이다.
왜 '망한다'라는 거친 말을 굳이 쓰느냐고.
왜 이렇게 부정적인 시선으로 이 나라를 바라보느냐고 묻고 싶을 것이다.
그러나 나는 되묻고 싶다.
정말 이 사회가 제자리를 걷고 있다고 믿는가?
뉴스를 켜면 들려오는 것은 연예인의 스캔들이 아니라
수십억을 가로챈 ‘사기꾼’의 이야기이고,
거리에선 어르신이 전화금융 사기에 속아 노후자금을 날리고,
대기업 총수들은 사면을 선물처럼 받고,
부자들은 세금 없는 부동산을 더 쌓아가며,
빈곤층의 퇴로는 점점 막혀간다.
아이들은 학교에서 괴롭힘을 견디며 하루하루를 버틴다.
책상 앞에 앉아 있지만, 책보다 스마트폰을 더 오래 들여다본다.
경쟁은 치열하지만, 희망은 보이지 않는다.
청년들은 공정하지 않다는 사실을 너무 일찍 알아버렸고,
노인들은 늙어가는 것이 아니라 버려진다.
정치는 어떠한가.
‘국민’은 점점 정치인의 단어장에서 사라지고,
진영 논리는 '진실'마저도 조각내 버린다.
법은 선택적으로 작동하고,
법을 만드는 이들은 제 잇속을 먼저 챙긴다.
‘정의’는 구호로만 존재할 뿐,
현실에선 힘 있는 자의 얼굴을 따라 움직이는 허깨비가 되어버렸다.
그 누구도, 어느 한 분야도 온전히 제 역할을 다하지 않는다.
언론은 권력의 입을 대변하고,
교육은 암기와 등수만 남은 고통의 장이 되었으며,
예술과 종교, 학문은 불편한 진실 앞에서 고개를 돌린다.
나는 이 책을 절망의 선언으로 쓰지 않는다.
오히려 가장 깊은 곳까지 내려가는 고백의 글쓰기이다.
우리가 왜 망할 수밖에 없는지,
그러면서도 왜 망하지 않아야 하는지,
그 모순된 갈망 사이에서 이 책은 출발한다.
내가 이 책에서 하고 싶은 말은 단순하다.
“지금이라도 직시하면, 망하지 않을 수 있다.”
그러나 그 ‘직시’란 눈 한번 감고 넘어가는 식이 아니다.
역사를, 권력을, 자본을, 문화와 교육을,
그리고 무엇보다 우리를 지배하고 있는 거대한 ‘자기기만’을 파헤쳐야 한다.
한국은 아직 망하지 않았다.
그러나 지금 이대로라면, 너무나도 자연스럽게, 조용히, 돌이킬 수 없이 무너질 수 있다.
이 책은 그 붕괴의 예고편을 읽는 연습이자,
다시 시작할 수 있는 사람들을 위한 비망록이다.
망하지 않기 위해서는, 먼저 우리가 얼마나 위태로운지를 아는 것부터 시작해야 한다.
믿기지 않는 사람들은 구한말 대한제국의 꼬락서니를 되짚어 보라.
나라가 무너지는 게 시간문제라는 사실을 깨달을 것이다.
외적의 침입이나 간섭이 아니라 내부의 부패와 분열이 멸망에 이르는 지름길임을 알 것이다.
나라는 백성들을 내팽개치고 굶주림에 견디다 못한 백성은 만주로 연해주로 살길을 찾아 나섰다.
임란 때 왜놈들이 쳐들어왔을 때 백성은 싸우는데 임금은 나라를 버리고 의주로 피난을 떠났다.
동족상잔의 6•25전쟁 때도 대통령은 서울을 버리고 부산으로 피난을 떠나는 데자뷰가 일어났다.
지금은 또 어떠한가.
대통령이라고 뽑아 놓았더니 내란을 일으켜 국민들을 피곤하게 만들어 놓고도 뻔뻔하게 고개를 쳐들고 소리를 지르고 있지 않은가.
과거에 나라가 망할 때처럼 달라진 게 하나도 없다.
탐관오리들이 나라를 통채로 왜놈들에게 바치는 것과 미국과의 협상에서 쩔쩔매는 외교가 역사는 늘 반복된다는 교훈을 주는 것 같아 씁쓸하기만 하다.
자, 이제야말로 내 말에 모두가 동의할 것이라고 본다.
우리가 믿을 건 우리들 일반 백성들, 요즘 말로 하면 민주시민들 뿐이다.
국회의원들은 시원한 국회의사당에서 스마트폰으로 누드사진을 감상하고, 주식창을 들여다 보며 여유롭게 노닐며, 대다수 공직자들은 각자의 잇속을 채우는데 여념이 없고, 장관은 관세 협상을 위해 미국 협상 상대의 꽁무니를 따라다니는 해프닝을 벌이고 있고, 나라가 망해도 이들은 끄떡없이 잘 살 무리들이다.
이 정도면 나라가 망해도 크게 이상할 일이 아니지 않을까.
식자들은 내 힘으로 할 수 없는데 나더러 어떡하냐는 말만 반복하고 있다.
청년들은 헬조선을 외치면서 일본으로 동남아로 떠나서 돌아올 생각을 하지 않는다.
나는 이 절망의 순간에 오히려 희망의 메시지를 전하고 싶어서 이 책을 쓰고 있다.

Anyone who sees the title of this book for the first time will surely be perplexed.
Why do you bother using the harsh word "doomed"?
You might want to ask why we view this country with such a negative perspective.
However, I want to ask again.
Do you really believe that this society is moving in its place?
When you turn on the news, what you hear is not the celebrity's scandal, but...
It's the story of a "con artist" who swindled billions of won, and...
On the streets, elderly people are being scammed by phone scams and losing their retirement funds,
The heads of major corporations receive pardons like gifts,
The wealthy accumulate more tax-free real estate,
The escape route for the poor is increasingly blocked.
The children endure bullying at school and get through each day.
Although I'm sitting at my desk, I stare at my smartphone longer than at a book.
The competition is fierce, but there is no hope in sight.
Young people realized too early that it was unfair,
The elderly do not age but are abandoned.
What about politics?
"The word 'people' is gradually disappearing from the vocabulary lists of politicians, and..."
The logic of factions even shatters the 'truth'.
The law operates selectively,
Those who make laws prioritize their own interests first.
"Justice" exists only as a slogan,
In reality, I became a phantom moving along with the faces of the powerful.
No one, no field, fully fulfills its role.
The press represents the mouth of power,
Education has become a place of suffering, with only memorization and rankings remaining.
Art, religion, and scholarship turn away from uncomfortable truths.
I do not write this book as a declaration of despair.
Rather, it is a confession writing that goes down to the deepest part.
Why we have no choice but to fail,
Yet why shouldn't we fail?
This book begins amidst those contradictory desires.
What I want to say in this book is simple.
"If we face it now, we might not fail."
However, that "facing" is not something you can just close your eyes and move on.
History, power, capital, culture and education,
And above all, we must uncover the immense "self-deception" that dominates us.
Korea has not yet collapsed.
However, if things continue as they are now, they could collapse so naturally, quietly, and irreversibly.
This book is an exercise for reading the trailer of that collapse, and...
This is a memorandum for those who can start over.
To avoid ruin, we must first begin by understanding how precarious we are.
Those who find it hard to believe should reflect on the state of the Korean Empire during the late Joseon Dynasty.
You will realize that it is only a matter of time before the country collapses.
You will realize that internal corruption and division, rather than external invasions or interference, are the shortcut to ruin.
The country abandoned its people, and the people, unable to endure the hunger, set out to find a way to survive in Manchuria and the Primorsky Krai.
During the Imjin War, when the Japanese invaders invaded, the people fought, but the king abandoned the country and fled to Uiju.
During the Korean War, a fratricidal conflict, there was a déjà vu where the president abandoned Seoul and fled to Busan.
What about now?
After electing someone as president, they caused an insurrection and exhausted the people, yet they are shamelessly holding their heads high and shouting.
Nothing has changed as much as when the country collapsed in the past.
It's bitter to think that corrupt officials handing over the entire country to the Japanese and their struggling diplomacy in negotiations with the United States seem to teach us that history always repeats itself.
Now, I believe everyone will agree with what I say.
The only people we can trust are us ordinary citizens, or in today's terms, democratic citizens.
Members of the National Assembly leisurely enjoy nude photos on their smartphones in the cool National Assembly building, peek into stock trading, and most public officials are busy filling their own pockets, ministers are creating a happening by following their U.S. counterparts for tariff negotiations, and these are people who will live well even if the country collapses.
Wouldn't it be not too strange if the country were to collapse at this point?
The educated keep repeating, "What can I do when I can't do it with my own strength?"
The young people shout "Hell Joseon" and leave for Japan and Southeast Asia, showing no intention of returning.
