음악은 평화다

지난 6월 27일 저녁 제주시 연삼로, 보리장마의 흐린 하늘이 거리 위로 칙칙하게 내려앉았다. 예술문화 공간 '누보'를 찾아갔다. '음악은 평화'라는 타이틀로 진행되는 원형준의 바이올린 연주와 Art Talk에 참석하기 위해서였다. 연주자와 관객이 코앞에서 서로의 숨소리를 느끼며 바이올린을 연주하고 감상하는 소중한 기회였다. 연주무대나 시설이 다소 열악하긴 했지만, 연주자의 곡 설명을 직접 들으며 연주곡 하나하나에 집중할 수 있었다. 다섯 곡 모두 멋진 연주였다. 그 중에 사라사테의 '찌고이네르바이젠'이 가장 큰 박수를 받았다.
바이올린 연주에 이어 제주국제화센타 송정희 대표의 사회로 '아트토크'가 진행되었다. 바이올리니스트로서 원형준이 걸어온 인생역정과 함께 '린덴바움 페스티벌'이 오늘에 이르기까지의 숨은 이야기를 들었다. 예술감독 원형준의 음악철학과 앞으로의 꿈을 이해하는 시간이기도 하였다. 음악감독으로서 원형준은 음악을 통한 평화 실현에 꾸준한 노력을 기울여 왔다. 2010년 북한에 남북청소년 오케스트라를 제안했고, 최근에는 한반도 평화음악회를 구상 중이다. 광복 70주년 판문점 평화음악회와 DMZ 평화음악회를 기획했던 그는 제주의 '평화의 섬' 실현을 위한 활동도 하고 있다.
그가 심혈을 기울이는 '린덴바움 페스티벌'은 음악을 통해 한반도의 평화와 인류애에 기여하자는 취지에서 만들어졌다. 2009년 제1회 페스티벌은 세계적 거장 샤를 뒤투아와 함께 100인의 젊은 연주인들이 모여 하모니를 선사했다. 이후 린덴바움 페스티벌은 지금까지 '화해와 평화'라는 주제로 인종과 국적, 정치의 벽을 넘어 평화의 연주(One People One Harmony) 미션을 수행하고 있다.
음악회가 열린 저녁, 죽음의 공포를 피해 '평화의 섬' 제주로 도망쳐 온 예멘난민에 대한 논란은 전국으로 퍼지고 있었다. 그들은 '제주의 평화'를 위협하는 테러리스트이거나 혐오스러운 인종들이고, 오로지 구제 대상인 귀찮은 존재일 뿐일까? 그들은 오히려 우리에게 '평화의 섬 제주'의 의미를 되새겨 보는 담론의 기회를 주고 있다. 예멘난민은 비지성적 혐오의 대상이 아니라, 평화를 나누어 주어야 할 '이웃'인 것이다. 난민보호에 대한 여러 제약이나 어려움을 지혜롭게 대처하고 극복한다면, 역사는 후일 우리를 높이 평가할 것이다.
원형준 음악감독은 내년 '2019 린덴바움 페스티벌'의 제주개최를 계획하겠다고 말했다. 린덴바움 페스티벌은 과거의 상처를 어루만지고, 현재의 아픔에 동참하며, 미래의 평화를 소망하는 뮤직 페스티벌이다. 린덴바움 페스티벌이 지향하는 목표는 평화의 섬, 국제자유도시 제주가 가고자 하는 미래 비전과 다르지 않다.
근래에 들어 많은 문화이민자들이 제주에 둥지를 틀고 여러 문화예술 분야에서 꾸준히 성과물을 내고 있다. 규모가 큰 관변 문화예술행사도 계절마다 열리고, 대중 공연예술도 과거에 비해 많이 늘었다. 이에 더해 내년 '2019 린덴바움 페스티벌'이 제주에서 성황리에 열려 '한라산국제음악제'로 발전하는 계기가 된다면 얼마나 좋을까! 제주4·3의 비극을 역사 속에 기억하기 위한 평화의 음악축제가 해마다 한라산 숲 속에서 울려 퍼진다면, 제주해협을 건넌 멋진 평화의 화음이 한반도를 관통해 백두산까지 울려 퍼질 것이다. 매년 평화를 소망하는 남과 북의 가슴을 울릴 것이다. 이게 꿈이어야만 하는가? <김양훈 프리랜서 작가>
[Music is Peace]

On the evening of June 27, the cloudy skies of the barley rainy season in Jeju City, Yeonsam-ro, dwindled over the streets. I went to the art and culture space 'Nouveau'. It was to participate in the violin performance and Art Talk of Won Hyung Joon, titled 'Music is Peace'. It was a priceless opportunity for the performer and audience to feel each other's breathing in front of the nose and to play and appreciate the violin. Although the performance stage and facilities were rather poor, I could concentrate on each piece of music by listening to the player's song description directly. All five songs were great performances. Among them, Sarasate 's "Chichoi Nerbaizen" received the biggest applause.
Following the violin performance, 'Art Talk' was held as a representative of Song Jeong-Hee, Jeju International Center. As a violinist, I heard the story of Lindenbaum Festival until today. It was also a time to understand the music philosophy of the artistic director Won Hyung Joon and his future dreams. As a music director, Won Hyung Jo has made steady efforts to realize peace through music. In 2010, he proposed a North-South Youth Orchestra in North Korea, and recently he is planning a peace concert on the Korean peninsula. He has organized the 70th anniversary of Panmunjom Peace Concert and DMZ Peace Concert. He is also active in the realization of 'Island of Peace' in Jeju.
The 'Lindenbaum Festival', in which he concentrates his efforts, was created to contribute to peace and humanity on the Korean Peninsula through music. In 2009, the first festival brought together hundreds of young musicians together with world famous master Charles du Toua. Since then, the Lindenbaum Festival has been conducting the One People One Harmony mission on the theme of reconciliation and peace.
The controversy over the Yemen refugees who fled to Jeju, an island of peace to avoid the fear of death, spread throughout the country. Are they terrorists or abominable races threatening the peace of Jeju, and are they only a nuisance, a relief? They rather give us the opportunity of discourse to recall the meaning of 'Jeju Island of Peace'. Refugees in Yemen are not objects of non-belligerent abomination, but are neighbors who should share peace. If we wisely cope with and overcome the various constraints or difficulties of refugee protection, history will appreciate us in the latter days.
Won Hyung-joon, the music director, said he plans to host the 2019 Lindenbaum Festival next year. The Lindenbaum Festival is a music festival that touches past injuries, joins the pain of the present, and hopes for peace in the future. The goal of the Lindenbaum Festival is no different from the vision of peace, the future vision of Jeju as an international free city.
In recent years, many cultural immigrants have nestled in Jeju and have been continuously producing works in various fields of culture and arts. Large - scale cultural arts events are held every season, and public performing arts have increased more than in the past. In addition, the '2019 Lindenbaum Festival' will be held in Jeju next year and it will be a good opportunity to develop into 'Halla Mountain International Music Festival'! If the peaceful music festival to remember the tragedy of Jeju 4 · 3 in history resonates in the mountains of Mt. Halla every year, a wonderful harmony of chords across the Jeju Strait will be echoed through Mt. It will ring the hearts of the North and the South that yearn for peace every year.
