- A trend-conscious people
When I first arrived in Vietnam in 2010, I was shocked to learn that many smart phone users in countries with an annual per capita income of only $ 1,500. In a word, I can not believe that smartphones are used by people in Vietnam cause even I, higher income person, didn't use smart phone. How I was stupid at that time!
Vietnam Already had a free of Wi-Fi Zone
in any place since 7 yesars ago!
In addition, Ho Chi Minh was a Wi-Fi Paradise. Not even a hotel, but a WiFi was free even in a street restaurant or small cafe. It was no wonder that free Wi-Fi was rare in Korea. Until 2013, the fee for a day was $ 10 to $ 20 in Singapore and Thailand five-star hotels.
A cup of coffee was only USD 0.5 with a Free Wife at cafe
For three months, I read all the books related to Vietnam in the library of National University in Korea, but the cheeky confidence collapsed at once. In fact, if you see people who use their smart phone even less than USD $ 200 in monthly salary the income level of the Vietnamese can not be measured.
It is now understood that the consumption power of Vietnamese people can not be grasped by simple statistical figures. China's statistical data are largely inflated with small things, but most of them are reported on a smaller scale than Vietnam because they can not figure out.
According to researcher ‘We Are Social’, the proportion of adults aged 18 or older with smartphones in Vietnam as of 2015 is 55% (2017 KOTRA Hanoi office Report). If it is estimated that it will exceed 80% in 2017, it is said that most of the people who live in the city of Vietnam use the smartphone considering the situation of Vietnam where the urbanization rate is only 25%.
So I was wondering if people in Vietnam actually use smartphones because they have enough money. I have been living in Vietnam for 7 years and I think that is true and there are other reasons as well.
It is because of the Vietnamese people's attachment to the new. Thirst for newness, this is the fourth reason I am convinced that Vietnam will soon be growing.
In comparison with Japan and Vietnam in 2011, the percentage of people carrying smartphones on the streets was higher in Vietnam. In Japan, the market has been very late due to the rejection of smart phone, and eventually it has been shrinking from the IT industry. However, the smartphone market has grown rapidly in Vietnam regardless of income level
The Internet environment in Vietnam also plays a part. Vietnam is not like a socialist country, but the internet environment is very good, so even if you go to a street café or restaurant that is on the street, there is a free WiFi zone. Da Nang, later places like the whole city formed a Wi-Fi zone.
Facebook usage is very high in Vietnam. According to researcher 'We Are Social', about 50 million people are using Facebook in Vietnam. It is very different from China, which is trying to block SNS and block public opinion.
Viettel, a Vietnamese army-run telecom company, is making profits by advancing to neighboring ASEAN countries Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Africa Mozambique, Tanzania and Peru South America. Unbelievable, Vietnam is an IT powerhouse.
There is a common statement by Koreans working in Vietnam. When we come to Vietnam for our employees in Korea HQ, the eyes of Vietnamese employees are more serious than ever, and there are many questions about the contents of the class. I think it is a logical leap to say that Vietnam, which is similar to Japan, Korea, and China, which has developed by learning new things and digesting others into oneself, will soon grow up.
There is a sense of divergence between conventional customs and accepting new things, but Vietnamese people are quick to accept new things in areas they think they need. Right now, the absolute market size is small, but when it feels that a particular product is needed, it can be instantaneous that the category size increases three times and four times.
Vietnam should not be said to have a potential because it is simply populated and has not yet grown. The potential of Vietnam is a market that can grow explosively when the trend is formed right now, even tomorrow.
That is why Vietnam, which has a vibrant country to accept new things, has to develop.
