스파이 카메라는 대략 2000년대 초반부터 상용화되었고 이제 CCTV는 사적 공적장소 어디에나 넘쳐난다. 스파이카메라 기술만큼 몰래카메라 탐지기도 발전했다. 하나쯤 가지고 다녀야 할 것 같다. 인터넷에서 몰가드(mol-guard)라는 제품은 1만 원 정도로 카드형태라고 한다. 몰카 탐지기는 주로 무선 주파수(RF)를 감지하거나, 적외선 또는 자기장을 탐지한다. 고가의 장비로도 100% 탐지는 어렵다는 전문가의 조언대로, 의심스러운 곳에는 타월이라도 덮거나 뒤집어놓기를 추천한다.
탐지과정에서도 타인의 전자장비를 스캔하는 것으로 오해도 받을 수 있다고 하니 보안에 대한 생각을 하고 살아야 할 것 같다. 일부 고급탐지기는 탐지된 데이터 수집용으로도 사용된다. 나도 모르게 디지털 원시인이 되어간다. 여행지에서뿐만 아니라 모든 장소에서 몰가드를 하나 휴대하며, 혹시 발견하게 될지도 모르는 몰카 탐지에 대한 무용담을 들려줄 유쾌한 상상을 해본다.
