사기꾼, 구세주 되기

 A Savior Than  A Scammer

 페이스북의 좋은 점은 소소한 일상이 포스팅으로 소통하고 기록됨으로써 느슨하게 연결된 편안한 느낌에 있지 않을까? 페이스북에 친구 신청해 온 사람들이 200여 명이 넘는다. 친구 수락도 삭제도 못한 채 페이스북에 쌓인 숫자이다. 친구신청이 왔으니 수락하고 싶지만, 해킹되어 다른 지인들에게 사기위험에 노출되게 한 괴이한 일로 선뜻 수락버튼도 누르지 못한다. 주로 외국인여성이 많은 편이다. 예쁜 아가씨 사진과 함께 나의 글에 '좋아요(like it)'를 눌러주었거나 메시지를 남겨놓기도 한다.   

 메시지에 답을 했다가 해킹이라도 되지 않을까, 뜻밖의 일과 연관 지어 신경 쓰는 일은 하지 않는 편이 낫다고 지레 담을 쌓는다. 보이스피싱, 스미싱 같은 일뿐 아니라 과거의 예기치 못한 일로 불신을 키웠다. 페이스북에 포스팅하는 일도 줄였다. 

 하지만 33세 Ben Taylor는 의심스러운 페이스북 메시지로부터 리베리아의 Joel과 소통하며 감동을 불러일으키는 과정을 소개한다. 의심과 불신의 시대를 살면서도 세상을 바라보는 다른 시각으로,  따뜻한 긍정의 여유로움까지 보여주고 있다. 구더기 무서워 장 못 담가서야 하면서도 실행은 어렵다.

guy with a most profound distaste 혐오. Let me just wait until you hear

how 33-year-old Ben Taylor responded to one random message which read: "My name is Joel from Liberia, West Africa. I need some assistance from you. Business or financial assistance dat (that) will help empower me."

To which Ben insincerely 불성실하게 responded, "How can I help?"

tricks that they use to get people. And there is no way you could have guessed where that rabbit hole is gonna go 어디로 향할지.

There's no way I could've guessed. The journey began when Joel, in Africa, proposed

a business partnership.

0:56 He asked Ben to mail used electronics to this address in New

Jersey. I looked it up on Google Earth. There were broken down

cars all over the place. Ben wasn't falling for 속지 않았다 that. Instead, he

proposed a different partnership. He lied to Joel, and told him he

owned a photography business and could use some pretty pictures.

So, how about a sunset? How about a nice Liberian senset?

1:18 And what? Were you gonna pay him for the pictures? 

Yeah, if it's good. If I like it, sure. You were just trying to keep him busy so

he doesn't rip off somebody else 다른 사람을 속이지 않게. "I figured the more time 사진 찍는 시간이 많을수록 of theirs that I could waste, the less time 시간은 적을 것이라고 that they'd have to spend ripping 사기치고 다닐 me or other people off."

1:31 Eventually, Joel sent two sunset photos -- we think. ( ) Turns out 알고 보니

scenic photography 풍경사진 ( ) wasn't exactly Joel's strong suit 강점, ( ) not that it

mattered 중요한 게 아니었죠. I told him, 'Hey, this is great. This is a good job, but I

think you need a little bit better of a camera 더 좋은 카메라.

So Ben actually spent 60 bucks to buy and mail him this shiny red one.

1:55 Now this has gone beyond wasting his time 시간낭비 이상. Now you're wasting

your time.

"Yeah, so I'm investing my money. My family thinks I'm crazy because I'm interacting with this guy in Liberia."

2:08 But Joel didn't think it was crazy at all. He wrote, I've decided to really commit 올인하기로 and devote myself to this business.

Ben replied, We've gotta work on your photography  네 사진 작업을 해야 해

And eventually Joel did get bette 나아졌다, ( ) which posed a big problem  그게 큰 문제가 되었다.

" What other pictures you want me to take?"또 어떤 사진을 찍고 싶나요

2:25 When he put in the work 착수한 때, I thought, oh no, now I've got to figure

out a way 방법을 찾아야 해 to compensate Joel for these pictures or I'm going to be the scammer 아님 내가 사기꾼 되게 생겼어

So Ben took to Youtube to sell a booklet 작은 책자 he made using the pictures. He called it "By D Grace of God, " a phrase borrowed from Joel's messages. The plan was to sell a few dozen

copies to friends and family, until sales exploded.

2:49 People from around the world and places that I've never even

heard of were buying Joel's book.

Soon they raised $1,000. Ben told Joel he could have half, and the rest, well, Joel would get that too, but with a catch 조건을 붙여. Ben told him he had to donate that $500 to charity.

3:07 And so with that intention in mind 그 의도를 염두에 두고, Ben wired the money 송금했다.

At this point you need to know 이점에서 알아야 할 게 있는데 $500 is like a year's salary of Liberia.

So really it's kind of ridiculous to expect an unemployed impoverished hustler 실직하고 가난한 사기꾼 to just give away 거저 나눠주다 all that money. In fact as Ben never thought he would, until another batch of pictures 사진 묶음 arrived.

3:30 There were book bags, notebooks. He cleaned out the market 싹쓸이, rented a cab to haul the loot 전리품을 옮기다 and blessed five schools with abundance 풍성하게.

Joel seen here with a crown inadvertently 어쩌다 보니 overhead, turned out to be more savior구세주 than scammer.

3:49 "He came through 해냈다." You were wrong about him. "He showed me

that there was a different side to him. So here we are."

Here we are, at the beginning of an unlikely 있을 것 같지 않은 partnership. 

Forged from 형성되었지만 doubt and distrust, ( ) but destined to 운명이었네요 change the world, and bring it a whole lot 아주 많이 closer together.

참고 예문

뜯겼군, 바가지 썼어 he got ripped off. The scammer ripped them off. The salesperson tried to rip me off. What a rip off!

Here's the catch꿍꿍이. It's too good to be true 사실이기에는 너무 좋은데. What's the catch? 무슨 꿍꿍이지? there is no catch 조건 없어.

  

인내심은 완전 최고지 Patience is my strong suit 강점. numbers are not my strong suit 숫자에는 꽝이야  

we all fell for it 속았어. Don't fall for the tricks of scammers. I'm not falling for that again 속지 말자. They fell for each other instantly. l fell for the first time I saw her. How could you fall for him? Love is blind.
