Nasdaq Reaches New High in Anticipation of Rate Cuts (WSJ. 20250908)

US Stock indexes rose today on expectations that the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates next week, following last month's weak jobs report. That led the Nasdaq to add nearly half a percent and close at a record high. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average were both up less than half a percent. Treasury yields declined, continuing a rally from Friday. Oil prices rose amid the possibility of further sanctions on Russia. Among individual companies, shares of telecom company EchoStar jumped 20% after it agreed to sell wireless airwaves to SpaceX for $17 billion. The deal weighed on shares of Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, which all dropped on the prospect of increased competition. Shares of online brokerage platform Robinhood and AppLovin rallied 16% and 12% respectively after an announcement that both companies are set to join the S&P 500. Nutanix shares climbed 7% due to the cloud computing company announcing it will enter the S&P mid-cap 400, and shares of Forward Industries skyrocketed 59% after it announced a deal to acquire the digital currency Solana.
