Oracle shares have surged around 40% in early trading today, after the company said it won several billion dollar contracts in its latest quarter. The wins revealed a bigger foothold in the booming artificial intelligence race than was previously understood. The database software company's backlog surged to $445 billion, a more than fourfold increase year over year. The U.S.'s producer price index fell 0.1% last month, a surprise to economists who, according to a Wall Street Journal poll, had expected a 0.3% rise. The gauge tracks the cost of goods and services purchased directly from producers. Today's data come a day ahead of the more widely followed consumer price index. Together, the two reports contribute to a key inflation gauge the Federal Reserve is trying to steer toward 2%. The Fed's next interest rate decision is due in a week. And the European Union plans to propose a partial suspension of its trade agreement with Israel as pressure builds on the institution to take a harder line on Gaza. EU President Ursula von der Leyen said today that the bloc also plans to propose sanctions on "extremist ministers and on violent settlers." Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar called the comments regrettable.
