Waymo Faces New Challenger in Atlanta (WSJ. 20250910)
Waymo is facing a new challenger in Atlanta. Three months ago, the Alphabet unit began offering driverless rides in the city through Uber. Starting today, riders using the Lyft app can be matched with a minivan operated by May Mobility. For now, those vans will operate in a small portion of the city and include a human driver who can take over in case of a problem. Atlanta is becoming a hub for autonomous vehicle competition due to customer density and a friendly regulatory environment, according to Lyft's executive Vice President. Plus, Oracle shares jumped 29% in pre-market trading as its backlog swells with big AI deals. The database software company finished the latest quarter with $455 billion in contracted revenue it expects to collect. That is up four times more than the same quarter a year earlier, and its CEO said several more multi-billion dollar customers are expected to sign on in the next few months. The bright revenue prospects overshadowed a mixed performance for its fiscal first quarter. Finally, Robinhood is launching its own social media network within its app. Robinhood Social will allow users to post their trades, follow other investors, and track trades of public figures. The company will roll out a beta version of the platform to roughly 10,000 users in the first quarter of next year, with a wider launch date to be determined.
