오늘은 구글임원이 실리콘밸리 알바생"된 사연입니다!!
이런 저런 포스팅과 언론사 칼럼, 유튜브 영상 인터뷰를 통해서 알려는 드렸는데, 오늘은 종합편^^
구글에서 16+년을 일해오던 저는, 2023년 구글의 1만 2천명 정리해고 layoff 발표때 포함이 되었습니다. 처음엔 ‘왜 나야, 내팀이야’ 라고 화도 났지만, 내가 먼저 끊을 수 없었을 구글이라는 ‘안정빵 생활’을 구글이 나를 대신해 끊어준 것이라는 급 반전의 생각이 들었습니다.
그리곤 30년 커리어 기간동안 그렇게 하고 싶었던 갭이어를 가졌습니다. 하고 싶은게 너무 많았었는데, 일단 고객 접점에서 사람을 만나고 싶은 것이 1순위여서, 미국 리테일의 이단아인 트레이더 조에서 알바, 스타벅스 바리스타, 리프트 운전을 1년동안 했습니다. 물론 커뮤니케이션 컨설팅은 계속 하면서요. 그리고 그 경험을 책으로 엮었습니다. “구글임원이 실리콘밸리 알바생이 되었습니다" 라는 제목의 책입니다. 막 따끈하게 막 나왔습니다!
갭이어 기간인 2023년 1년동안 1만명 이상 만났고, 미국 동서 횡단 거리를 걸었고, 잠은 하루 평균 3시간 잤어요(너무 했죠 ㅠ.ㅠ). 책 제목 [구글임원에서 실밸리 알바생이 되었습니다]이 낚시성 제목같지만, 100% 순도 리얼입니다. 시급 알바생일, 많이 배우고있고, 생각보다 재밌습니다!
요즘 미국이나 한국 모두 주변에 layoff 되신 분들, 혹은 자의반타의반으로 회사를 잠시 떠난 분들이 너무 많더라구요. 꼭 layoff 아니여도 인생에 힘든 변화들, 특히 내가 원하지 않았던 변화를 주도적으로 전환시키는 얘기를 이 책에서 얘기하고 싶었습니다. 미국직장인 중 2명중 1명이 겪는다는 흔한 일이 layoff이지만 사실 본인에게 막상 닥치면 그게 정말 쉬운 일은 아니더라구요. 눈물없이는 읽을 수 없는 책 ㅎㅎ

Hello,
For the last several months, I've shared bits and pieces about my career situation and my gap year project through various postings, op-eds, and YouTube interviews. Today, I'll tell you the full story — of course, a concise and simple version.
I worked at Google for 16+ years, but in early 2023, I was impacted by the layoff that affected 12,000 people at Google. At first, I wondered why me? Why my team?
But then, I realized that Google had been my mooring for so long that I could not decide to cast off the line by myself. So, Google did it for me.
Google was the long-time provider of financial stability, career opportunity, social connections, and sense of prestige and achievement in my life. It was a jarring and daunting moment to finally leave the comfort zone, but it allowed me time to start a new adventure and sail uncharted waters.
Thus, I launched my “gap year” project — something that I had always wanted to do in my life. As my top priority, I wanted to interact with people face-to-face in order to learn from them. I came to be a crew member of a US grocery store, called Trader Joe’s, a Starbucks barista, and a Lyft driver, all the while continuing to provide freelance communications consulting services. Over the course of 2023, I met over 10,000 people and walked a distance equal to the U.S. east to west, covering more than 5,000 kilometers. I chronicled these experiences into a book, titled “From Google to Gig”, which was just published on April 24th.
While the title — From Google to Gig — may sound clickbaity, the content is 100% real and authentic based on my first-hand experiences. Whether in the U.S., Korea, or anywhere else in the world, a lot of people are currently experiencing layoffs or facing other difficult changes in their lives.
In this book, I share stories about how to navigate through forced and unexpected changes in life based on what I went through after my layoff. Even though unexpected change happens, you still can take the initiative to transmute it into a good change in your life. Life is dynamic and long, and there are always peaks and valleys. So, appreciate the good times and have faith through the challenging times.
My book ends with: “Thank you, Google, for casting off the lines on my behalf.” �
