동정과 연민은 타인의 슬픔에 대한 우리의 동류의식을 나타내는데 적당한 단어들이다. 공감(sympathy)이라는 것의 의미는 아마도 처음에는 같았지만 지금은 다량의 부적당한 것(역. 다른 뜻이나 의미)을 제하고서라도 어떤 열정이라든가 무언가에 대한 우리의 동류의식을 표시하는데 쓰는 걸로 만들어졌다
