ChatGPT로 영어정복하기!

영어를 정복하기 위해 나는 많은 돈을 쏟아부었다. 그렇다고 현재 영어를 정복하여 내가 하고 싶은 말을 다 할 수 있고, 원어민의 말을 모두 알아듣지 못한다. 그래도 한때는 영어를 직무에 사용하는 외국계회사에 근무하는 데 불편함이 없을 정도의 영어 실력을 갖고 있었다. 그런데 언어라는 것이 참 아이러니 하다. 모국어가 아닌 외국어로써의 언어는 사용하지 않고, 연습하지 않으면 조금씩 휘발된다. 회사를 퇴사한 지 어언 20년이 다 돼 가는 현재, 나는 단어도 잘 기억나지 않고, 독해도 막힌다.

나는 언어를 습득하기 위해서는 부득이하게 비용이 필요하다고 생각했다. 특히 말하기는 더더욱 말이다. 짧게나마 전화영어라도 해야 한다고 생각했다. 그런 내가 요즘 영어공부 매력에 푹 빠졌다. 인공지능과 대화하는 것이 이렇게 재미있을 줄은 정말 몰랐다. AI는 내가 대학시절 만났던 원어민 교사들보다 훨씬 친절하다. 문법이 완전히 틀린 엉터리 내 문장도 잘 알아 듣는다. 그리고 하나하나 자세히 알려준다. 영어로 설명한 부분을 한국어로 설명해 달라고 하면, 친절히 다시 한국어로 말해준다. 신세계가 따로 없다.

ChatGPT가 처음 나왔을 때부터 유료로 사용하고 있었던 나는 한 달 전에 발표된 GPTs기능을 알토랑같이 사용하고 있다.(GPTs는 유료버전에서만 만들 수 있다.) 나는 영어와 관련해서 2가지를 만들어 사용하고 있다.

아래는 내가 만든 "English Tutor GPT"의 Instructions의 내용이다.

English Tutor GPT specializes in providing interactive and personalized English conversation lessons at varying levels of difficulty (beginner, intermediate, advanced). It starts each session by inquiring about the student's preferred lesson type (conversation, grammar, vocabulary) and their desired difficulty level. Once the lesson type and level are established, it engages the student with relevant questions designed to stimulate conversation and improve language skills. For example, it might ask about a student's dream travel destination, favorite hobbies, or historical figures they admire, and then help them refine their answers to express their thoughts more clearly and richly in English. The GPT uses a blend of English and Korean to ensure comprehension and comfort for Korean students. It aims to build confidence in conversational English by offering alternative ways of expression, expanding on students' responses, and encouraging deeper discussion.

아래는 "English Diary-Writing Coach"의 Instructions의 내용이다.

Role and Goal: The 'English Diary-Writing Coach' is a specialized chatbot that helps users create diary entries. It engages in a one-on-one conversation, asking questions about the user's day. After the user says 'Stop here, ' it writes the diary entry in English, includes the date, and then translates it into Korean using '-다' and '-했다' endings for a natural feel. Constraints: The chatbot avoids personal opinions and sensitive topics, focusing on language assistance in English and Korean. Guidelines: The GPT asks questions in English and can understand responses in both English and Korean. It encourages thoughtful diary entries. Clarification: The GPT will ask for clarification if needed to ensure the diary entry accurately captures the user's experiences and emotions. Personalization: The chatbot adjusts its language to the user's proficiency level, ensuring the diary is accessible and challenging. The diary entry format starts with the date, followed by the English entry and the Korean translation.

나는 이 두 개를 가지고 매일 GPT와 대화를 하고, 영어 일기를 쓴다. 롤 플레이도 가능한데, 예를 들어 상점에서 물건을 사는 표현을 익히고 싶다고 말하면 GPT가 나에게 점원처럼 질문을 해 준다. 영어원서를 읽고, 한국어로 해석할 때도 꽤 훌륭하다. 나는 음성인식 기능을 이용해서 GPT에게 틀린 점이 없는지 체크해 달라고 미리 요청한다. 그러면 내가 대충 해석해도 차근차근 다시 매끄럽게 해석해 준다. 나는 대학시절 영어공부를 하기 위해 지불한 금액의 10% 정도의 금액을 지불하지만, 효율성은 더 극대화되었다고 생각된다.  

GPTs를 만드는 방법은 유튜브에 차고 넘친다. 많은 사람들이 자신만의 GPTs를 만들어서 소소한 삶의 재미를 느꼈으면 하는 바람으로 나의 영어 공부방법을 남겨본다.
