영국의 여름나기는 핌스(Pimm's)와 함께

반짝이는 킹스턴 호수 앞에서 Cheers~! 

영국에서의 여름은 한국과는 많이 다르다. 서머타임 시작을 기점으로 춥고 쌀쌀했던 영국에도 햇빛이 쨍쨍하고 더운 여름이 시작되었다. 영국인들에게 여름은 지난 겨울 동안 지속적인 비바람과 우중충한 날씨에 지친 시기에 따뜻한 선물과도 같은 소중한 계절이다. 따뜻한 햇빛이 내려쬐고 몽글몽글한 구름을 볼 수 있는 평범한 여름. 하지만, 이마저도 영국은 여름 기간 내에 자주 있지는 않기 때문에, 조금이라도 햇빛이 쨍쨍한 날이면 공원 및 호숫가, 바다로 놀러 가 물놀이와 선탠을 즐기곤 한다. 나와 내 남자친구도 이때가 기회다 싶은 마음으로 가볍게 호수 산책을 나왔다. 

Compared to the Korea, summer in the UK is very different. Starting from the beginning of the summer time, It was sunny and hot weather. For British, summer is a precious season, like gift. Because they always struggle with rain, wind, and gloomy weather. A typical summer which has warm sunlight and soft clouds. However, this is not often weather in the UK during the summer, so people frequently go to the park, lake, and the sea on sunny days to enjoy playing in the water and getting a suntan. My boyfriend and I went to the Kingston Riverside park, thinking that this would be a great opportunity to enjoy the sunshine. 

햇볕에 반사된 빛을 비추는 킹스턴의 호숫가, 그 곳에서 저마다의 방법으로 여름을 즐기고 있는 사람들. 

6월의 영국 여름이다. 그렇게 호숫가에 앉아 이야기를 나누고 주변을 걸어다니다가 우리는 한 레스토랑에 들어섰다. 여러 메뉴 중 한 칵테일 이름 하나가 눈에 들어왔다. 새콤달콤한 과일이 잔뜩 들어간 영국의 여름 음료. 보기만해도 과일향이 물씬 풍기는 예시 그림에 나는 주홍빛 나는 핌스(Pimm's)를 주문했다. 

The Riverside of Kingston, which shines reflected light from the sun, where people enjoy the summer in their own ways. This is the summer in the UK. We sat by the lake, talked, and walked around before entering a restaurant. One of the cocktails' names caught my eye. A refreshing British summer drink bursting with sweet and tangy fruit flavors. I ordered a scarlet-colored Pimm's just by looking at an exemplary paintingthat emanates a fruity aroma.

"핌스? 궁금하다! 마셔보고 싶어!"

"응! 핌스 상큼해! 나도 좋아해! 같은 걸로 주문하자!"

"Pimm's? Sounds so interesting! I want to try it!"

"Yes! Pimm's is refreshing drink! I like it too! Let's get order the same thing!"

영국인들이 여름에 즐겨 마시는 핌스는 진(Gin)을 베이스로 딸기, 레몬, 민트, 오이 등 각종 과일과 채소들이 들어가는 포쉬한 칵테일이다. 영국인들에게 핌스는 여유로운 일요일 오후, 호수 혹은 해변가를 등지고 앉아 스몰토크하는, 또는 손에 땀을 쥐는 치열한 윔블던의 테니스 경기를 관람하며 즐기는 여름 휴가와 같은 것 같다. 핌스는 1823년에서 1840년 사이 런던에서 오이스터 바를 운영하던 제임스 핌(James Pimm)에 의해 탄생한 음료로 소화에 도움이 되는 자양강장제를 목적으로 만들어졌다고 한다. 제임스 핌은 사실 브랜디, 럼 그리고 보드카를 포함해서 6가지의 다른 버전을 제조하였지만, 현재까지 남아있는 것은 진으로 만든 첫번째 음료라고 한다. 하이볼에 레몬에이드나 진저에일과 함께 가니쉬해서 마시는 것이 특징이다. 

Pimm's, a posh cocktail based on Gin that British people enjoy drinking in summer, is made with various fruits and vegetables like strawberries, lemons, mint, and cucumber. For British, Pimm's seems like a relaxing Sunday afternoon, a summer vacation to sit back on a lake or beach and have a small talk, or watch a hand-throbbing Wimbledon tennis match. Pimm's was born between 1823 and 1840 by James Pimm, who ran an oyster bar in London, and have been made for the purpose of a nutritional tonic that helps digestion. James Pimm actually manufactured six different versions, including brandy, rum, and vodka, but what remains is the first gin-based drink. It is characterized by garnish with lemonade or ginger ale in highball.

영국 슈퍼마켓에서 구할 수 있는 Pimm's No.1 Cup

Lidi(리들), Sainsbury(세인즈버리) 등 영국의 슈퍼마켓에선 "Pimm's No.1 Cup" 이라는 브랜드를 쉽게 접할 수 있다. 진을 베이스로 하여 퀴닌과 허브 등의 재료를 더해 만들어진 음료로 1859년부터 상업적 판매를 시작했다고 한다. 그 이후 2차 세계 대전과 1960년대 이후 핌스의 베이스가 되는 증류주의 종류를 늘려갔다. 직장을 윔블던 쪽으로 다녔음에도 불구하고 테니스 경기를 보지 못했다. 내년 7월에는 꼭 핌스와 함께 윔블던 테니스 경기를 직관하리라... 킹스턴 호숫가에서 핌스를 홀짝이면서 아쉬운 마음을 달래본다. 

You can easily find "the brand "Pimm's No.1 Cup" in supermarkets in the UK, such as Lidl and Sainsbury's. Commercial sales of the beverage, based on gin and made by adding ingredients such as quinine and herbs, reportedly commenced in 1859. Since then, the number of distillates on which Pimm's has increased with World War II and the 1960s. Even though My workplace is near from the Wimbledon, I haven't watch the tennis match at Wimbledon. I definitely will watch the Wimbledon tennis match with Pimm's in next July... Sipping Pimm's on the shore of Kingston River, I tried to get rid of my disappointment. 

더웠다가도 긴팔을 입을 정도로 서늘한 비바람이 불 때면 영국의 뜨거운 여름의 맛이 생각난다. 

뜨거운 햇빛 아래, 킹스턴 호숫가에서 상큼한 핌스와 함께 더위도 잊을 만큼 시원하고 여유로운 영국의 여름을 온전히 즐겼던 여름이 그리워지는 시간이다.

Even if it's cold weather outside, I still remind of the cool taste of summer in the UK. 

Under the scorching sunlight, I sincerely miss the summer time in the UK, where we were able to fully enjoy the cool and relaxed atmosphere near the shore of Kingston River, enjoying refreshing Pimm's.
