주제: Lucifer만큼이나 악랄했던
또 다른 무리의 천사들
1. 에녹이란 사람
Enoch (에녹) 이란 사람이 존재했었습니다. 창세기 (The Book of Genesis)의 본문을 보면 에녹은 하나님이 그가 살아있었을 때 데려가셨는데, 그때 나이가 365살이었다지요. 본문을 인용하면 에녹이 “하나님과 동행하였으나 하나님이 그를 데려가셨기에 그가 더 이상 세상에 존재하지 않았다”(창 5:21-24)"고 하는데, 일부 유대교와 기독교 전통에서는 에녹이 살아서 천국에 들어간 것으로 해석하고 있습니다.
Approx. BC 3,350년경에 태어난 Enoch 은 대홍수에서 생존한 Noah (노아)의 증조할아버지였지요. 아래 링크를 보시면 그저 한 종교의 기록이 아닌, 공식적인 역사의 한 기록임을 인식하게 될 것입니다. 참고로 올해 2024년은 현대 천문학의 창시자 (행성 운동 법칙 개발)인 요하네스 케플러의 관점에서 본 창조 (The Creation) 이후 6000년이 되는 해입니다. 그는 기원전 3977년을 창조의 해로 지목했지요. '0'이라는 연도가 없으므로 2024년은 정확히 창조 이후 6000년이 되는 해입니다 (그의 성경적 계산이 맞다면). 아래 링크에서는 BC 3974 년이 창조 (The Creation)의 해로, 이 계산으로 하면 2025년이 창조 이후 6000년이 되는 해가 되겠지요.

에녹의 아들이었던 "무드셀라"라는 사람의 이름이 유명하지요? 예전 80년대 한국 코미디 프로그램에 어느 아이의 이름을 너무 길게 지어 (오래 건강하게 살라고) 생긴 해프닝을 그려낸 코너가 있었습니다. 어느 아이가 사고를 당하게 되었는데 구하러 가는 과정에서 아이 이름을 알려주는 시간이 너무 길어 아이는 결국 죽게 된다는 이야기였지요. 역사기록에서 장수하거나 건강했던 사람들이나 동물들의 이름을 모조리 다 집어넣은 이름이었고, 그 이름은 이랬답니다:
"김수한무 거북이와 두루미 심천갑자 동방삭 치치가포 사리사리 센타 워리워리 사브리깡 무드셀라 구름이 허리케인 담벼락 서생원에 고양이 고양이는 바둑이 바둑이는 돌돌이!"
당시 사람들에게는 요즘 100세까지 산다는 세상이 우스워보일 것이 확실합니다. 보통 몇백살을 사셨으니까요.
2. 에녹의 시대에 땅으로 내려온 천사들
이 에녹이 쓴 에녹서 (The Book of Enoch)가 있습니다. 개신교에서는 (구교에서도) 외경 (Apocrypha)으로 알려진 책들이 많이 있는데, 그중 가장 논란이 되고 유명한 책이지요 ancient Hebrew apocalyptic religious text라고도 알려져 있습니다.
이 책에 보면 Lucifer (루시퍼)와 더불어 인간사에 큰 타격을 주고 있는 (또는 주었던) 천사들의 집단이 등장합니다. 다만 Lucifer는 창세 전 또는 창세 이후 아담과 이브가 죄를 지었던 그날 이전에 하나님에 대한 반란을 꾀했던 존재였지만, 에녹 시대에 인간에게 영향을 주었던 천사집단들은 The Book of Enoch을 읽어보면 이전의 Lucifer 집단과는 다른 것처럼 이해가 됩니다.
이 책의 관련된 본문을 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
The Book of Enoch Chapter 6
1. 사람의 자손이 번성하였고, 그때에 아름답고 어여쁜 딸들이 그들에게서 태어났습니다. 2. 하늘의 자녀들인 천사들이 그들을 보고 사모하여 서로 말하되, '오라, 우리도 사람의 자녀 중에서 아내를 택하여 자식을 낳자'라고 했습니다. 3. 그러자 그들의 지도자 Semjâzâ 가 그들에게 말했습니다: '너희가 참으로 이 일에 동의하지 않을까 두렵고, 나 혼자 큰 죄의 형벌을 받아야 할 것이다'. 4. 그들이 모두 그에게 대답하여 이르되, '우리 모두 맹세하여 이 계획을 포기하지 않고 이 일을 행할 것을 서로 맹세합시다' 하니, 4. 5. 그러자 그들은 모두 함께 맹세하고 서로 맹세함으로써 연합했습니다. 6. Jared 시대에 ⌈어느 산 정상에 내려온 천사들이 모두 이백 명이었는데, 그들이 그곳을 Hermon Mountain이라 불렀으니, 이는 그들이 서로 맹세하고 그 위에 서로 결박하였기 때문에 지어진 이름입니다. 7. 그리고 이것은 그들의 지도자들의 이름입니다: 그들의 지도자 세미아즈, 아르키바, 라므엘, 코카비엘, 타므엘, 라므엘, 단엘, 에제크엘, 바라크엘, 아사엘, 아르마로스, 바타렐, 이난렐, 자키엘, 쌈사페엘, 사타렐, 투렐, 얌쟈엘, 사리엘 (Sêmîazâz, their leader, Arâkîba, Râmêêl, Kôkabîêl, Tâmîêl, Râmîêl, Dânêl, Êzêqêêl, Barâqîjâl, Asâêl, Armârôs, Batârêl, Anânêl, Zaqîêl, Samsâpêêl, Satarêl, Tûrêl, Jômjâêl, Sariêl).
1. And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters. 2. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.' 3. And Semjâzâ, who was their leader, said unto them: 'I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.' 4. And they all answered him and said: 'Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.' 5. Then sware they all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. 6. And they were in all two hundred; who descended ⌈in the days⌉ of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. 7. And these are the names of their leaders: Sêmîazâz, their leader, Arâkîba, Râmêêl, Kôkabîêl, Tâmîêl, Râmîêl, Dânêl, Êzêqêêl, Barâqîjâl, Asâêl, Armârôs, Batârêl, Anânêl, Zaqîêl, Samsâpêêl, Satarêl, Tûrêl, Jômjâêl, Sariêl.
3. 200명의 천사가 인류에게 저지른 일들
에녹서 7장을 보면 인간의 딸들과 육체적 결합을 한 천사들이 인류에게 초래한 일들이 기록되어 있습니다. 다만 이는 전통적인 성경 (창세기)에 기록된 내용과 다소 상이하기도 하지요. 아마도 한 번쯤은 들어보셨을지도 모르는 이름 - 네필림 Nephilim (또는 거인들) - 이 여기에 언급되어 있습니다.
1. 다른 모든 천사들이 그들과 함께 아내를 취하고 각각 한 사람씩 선택하여 그들에게 들어가서 그들과 함께 자신들을 더럽히기 시작하여 그들에게 부적 (charm)과 마법과 뿌리 자르기를 가르치고 식물에 대해 이해하게 가르쳤습니다. 2. 그들이 임신하여 큰 거인을 낳았으니 그 키가 삼천 엘이었으며, 3. 그들이 사람의 모든 소유물을 앗아갔습니다. 그리고 사람들이 더 이상 그들을 감당할 수 없게 되자, 4. 거인들은 인류를 삼켰습니다. 5. 새와 짐승과 파충류와 물고기에게 죄를 짓고 서로의 살을 먹으며 그 피를 마시기 시작했습니다.
1. And all the others together with them took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. 2. And they became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells: 3. Who consumed all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, 4. the giants turned against them and devoured mankind. 5. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another's flesh, and drink the blood.
천사들이 자신들을 더럽히기 시작하여 라는 부분도 놀랍습니다. 인간과의 결합을 더럽힘이라고 명시했으니까요. 인간이 더럽다는 것이 아닌, 순수한 존재 (천사는 천사로 있어야 하고 인간은 인간으로 있어야 함)에서 벗어나게 된 짓을 한 것을 의미하는 듯합니다.
또한 위에서 밑줄을 그은 부분 "부적 (charm)과 마법과 뿌리 자르기를 가르치고"에 대한 의견은, 아마도 주술과 관련된, 즉 영적인 어떤 행위를 가르친 것이 아닐까 하는 추정이 많습니다. Charm이라 magic 은 당연히 그쪽 (주술) 소재인 데다, cutting of roots와 더불어 식물에 대한 이해 - 는 DMT라는 추정이 되는데, 나무뿌리에서 추출해 낼 수 있는 '주술과 관련된 성분'이 DMT 가 가장 유력해 보이니까요 (N, N-Dimethyltryptamine is a substituted tryptamine that occurs in many plants and animals, including humans, and which is both a derivative and a structural analog of tryptamine. DMT is used as a psychedelic drug and prepared by various cultures for ritual purposes as an entheogen.) DMT는 환각제로 사용되며 다양한 문화권에서 어떤 주술적인 의식의 목적으로 사용되고 있습니다. 그렇기에 전통 창세기 6장 5절에 다음과 같이 기록된 것이 아닐까 합니다: "The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth (하나님께서는 인간의 악함이 지구상에서 얼마나 큰지 보셨다)"
마지막에 아랫줄을 그은 부분을 보면 이 거인들 , 즉 Nephilim들이 새와 짐승과 파충류와 물고기에게 죄를 짓고 서로의 살을 먹으며 그 피를 마시기 시작했다라고 나오지요? 이 또한 sexual act 가 아니었나 추정할 수 있습니다. Sin against는 종교서적에서는 sexual context로 사용되는 경우가 거의 다입니다.
4. 그 외 이 타락한 천사들이 인류에게 한 일들
이 타락한 200명의 천사들이 그저 인간들의 딸들이 아름다우기에 sexual sin을 감행한 것만은 아닌 듯합니다. 이들은 인간들에게 주술을 가르치고, 아래와 같이 다른 것들도 (도구 및 기술의 사용) 전수했다고 합니다. The Book of Enoch 8장을 보겠습니다.
1. 아사셀 ( Azâzêl) 은 사람들에게 칼과 칼날과 방패와 흉갑을 만드는 법을 가르치고, 땅의 금속과 그것을 다루는 기술, 팔찌와 장신구, 안티몬의 사용, 눈꺼풀을 아름답게 하는 법, 온갖 값비싼 돌과 모든 색칠하는 팅크 등을 알려주었습니다. 2. 이 결과 경건하지 않은 인간들이 많이 생겨나서 음행을 저지르고 타락하여 모든 길에서 타락했습니다. 셈자 (Semjâzâ: 200명의 우두머리)는 마법을 가르치고 뿌리를 가르는 방법을, 아르마로스 ( Armârôs)는 마법을 걸고 푸는 방법...
1. And Azâzêl taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals 〈of the earth〉 and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all colouring tinctures. 2. And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways. Semjâzâ taught enchantments, and root-cuttings, Armârôs the resolving of enchantments...
그 결과 전통 창세기 6장 5절에 다음과 같이 기록된 이유입니다: "The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth (하나님께서는 인간의 악함이 지구상에서 얼마나 큰지 보셨다)"
5. 타락한 천사들이 저지른 죄악의 결과
에녹서 9장과 그 이후를 보면 이들 (200명의 천사들과 타락한 인간들) 이 처하게 되는 결과가 기록되어 있습니다. 인간들에게 가장 큰 영향을 준 타락천사 아사셀은 어느 사막에 위치한 영원한 구덩이에 결박되었고, 그 외 다른 천사들도 모두 결박되어 "심판의 날"에 영원히 소멸되지 않는 불속으로 던져지게 될 것을 The Book of Enoch 은 이야기하고 있습니다.
1. 그때 미가엘, 우리엘, 라파엘, 가브리엘 (천국에 있는 순수한 천사들) 이 하늘에서 내려다보면서 땅에 많은 피가 흘려지고 모든 불법이 행해지는 것을 보았습니다. 2. 그들이 서로 말하되, '땅이 거주자 없이 (인간들이 없이) 울부짖는 소리가 하늘 문까지 들렸습니다 (중략) 6. 하나님께서 아사셀이 행하신 일을 보셨으니, 아사셀은 땅에서 모든 불의를 가르치고 하늘에 (보존된) 영원한 비밀을 인간들에게 알려주었는데, 인간들이 이를 배우려고 애쓰고 있었습니다. (중략) 8. 그들이 땅에 있는 사람들의 딸들에게 가서 여자들과 동침하며 스스로 더럽히고 온갖 죄를 그들에게 드러냈습니다. 9. 여자들이 거인들을 낳았으므로 온 땅이 피와 불의로 가득 찼습니다.
창조주께서는 이 200명의 천사들과 그들의 우두머리 격인 십 수 명의 천사들을 이렇게 처리하셨다고 합니다:
4. 주님께서 다시 라파엘에게 이르시되, '아사셀의 손과 발을 결박하여 어둠 속으로 던지고, 두다멜에 있는 사막에 구멍을 내어 그 안에 던져라. 5. 그 위에 거칠고 울퉁불퉁한 바위를 깔고 어둠으로 덮고 거기서 영원히 거하게 하고 그의 얼굴을 가려서 빛을 보지 못하게 하라. 6. 그리고 큰 심판의 날에 그를 불 속에 던지리라. 그리고 천사들이 타락시킨 땅을 고치고 땅의 치유를 선포하여 전염병을 고치고 모든 사람의 자녀들이 파수꾼 (The Watchers: 타락한 200명의 천사들) 들이 공개하고 그들의 아들들에게 가르친 모든 비밀을 통해 멸망하지 않도록 해라. 8. 온 땅이 아사셀이 가르친 일로 인하여 타락하였으니 모든 죄를 그에게 돌리라. 9. 주께서 가브리엘에게 이르시되 '너는 서자들과 패역한 자들과 음행의 자손들을 대적하고 [음행의 자손들과] 파수꾼 (The Watchers: 타락한 200명의 천사들)의 자손들을 사람들 가운데서 멸하고 [그들을 나가게 하고] 그들을 서로 대적하여 싸우게 하라 그들이 오래가지 못하리라' 하셨느니라. 10. 그들(즉 그들의 조상들)이 주께 구하는 것을 그들의 조상들에게 대신하여 들어주지 말라.
4. And again the Lord said to Raphael: 'Bind Azâzêl hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dûdâêl, and cast him therein. 5. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there for ever, and cover his face that he may not see light. 6. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire. And heal the earth which the angels have corrupted, and proclaim the healing of the earth, that they may heal the plague, and that all the children of men may not perish through all the secret things that the Watchers have disclosed and have taught their sons. 8. And the whole earth has been corrupted through the works that were taught by Azâzêl: to him ascribe all sin.' 9. And to Gabriel said the Lord: 'Proceed against the bastards and the reprobates, and against the children of fornication: and destroy [the children of fornication and] the children of the Watchers from amongst men [and cause them to go forth]: send them one against the other that they may destroy each other in battle: for length of days shall they not have. 10. And no request that they (i.e. their fathers) make of thee shall be granted unto their fathers on their behalf; for they hope to live an eternal life, and that each one of them will live five hundred years.'
11. 하나님께서 미가엘에게 이르시되, '가서, 여자들과 연합하여 그들과 함께 모든 더러움으로 자신을 더럽힌 셈자사와 그의 동료들을 결박하여라. 12. 그리고 그들의 아들들이 서로 죽이고, 그들이 사랑하는 자들의 멸망을 보았을 때, 그들을 땅의 골짜기에서 칠십 대 동안 결박하여, 그들의 심판의 날과 그들의 완성의 날까지, 영원한 심판이 완성될 때까지, 땅의 골짜기에서 칠십 대 동안 결박하여라. 13. 그날에 그들은 불 못에 던져지고 〈그리고〉 고통과 영원히 갇히게 될 감옥에 던져지리라. 그리고 정죄를 받고 멸망할 사람은 그때부터 모든 세대가 끝날 때까지 그들과 함께 묶일 것이다. 15. 그리고 인류에게 잘못을 저질렀으므로 이 파수꾼들 (The Watchers: 타락한 200명의 천사들)의 자녀들의 모든 영을 소멸시켜라. 땅에서 모든 잘못된 것을 멸하고 모든 악한 일을 끝내고, 의와 진리의 식물이 나타나게 해라: 그리하면 복이 되리니 의와 진실의 행위가 영원히 진리와 기쁨으로 심어지리라.
11. And the Lord said unto Michael: 'Go, bind Semjâzâ and his associates who have united themselves with women so as to have defiled themselves with them in all their uncleanness. 12. And when their sons have slain one another, and they have seen the destruction of their beloved ones, bind them fast for seventy generations in the valleys of the earth, till the day of their judgement and of their consummation, till the judgement that is for ever and ever is consummated. 13. In those days they shall be led off to the abyss of fire: 〈and〉 to the torment and the prison in which they shall be confined for ever. And whosoever shall be condemned and destroyed will from thenceforth be bound together with them to the end of all generations. 15. And destroy all the spirits of the reprobate and the children of the Watchers, because they have wronged mankind. Destroy all wrong from the face of the earth and let every evil work come to an end: and let the plant of righteousness and truth appear: ⌈and it shall prove a blessing; the works of righteousness and truth⌉ shall be planted in truth and joy for evermore.
이 책 에녹서에는 타락한 천사들과 관련 Enoch 이 한 놀라운 일들 (선한 일들)에 대해서도 기록되어 있지만, 이번에는 200명의 타락한 천사들을 주제로 했기 때문에 다루지 않았습니다. 창조주께서 선택한 사람이었던 에녹은 이 타락한 천사들을 능가하는 능력과 권한이 주어졌었다는 기록만은 언급하며 이번 에피소드를 마무리하도록 하겠습니다.
