웃어라, 세상이 너와 함께 웃을 것이다.

울어라, 너 혼자만 울 것이다.

낡고 슬픈 이 땅에선 환희는 빌려야 하지만,

고통은 그 자체만으로도 가득하기에.

노래하라, 언덕들이 응답하리라

탄식하라, 허공에 흩어지고 말리라

메아리들은 즐거운 소리에 춤을 추지만,

너의 근심 소리는 외면하리라.

기뻐하라, 사람들이 너를 찾으리라.

슬퍼하라, 그들은 너를 떠날 것이다.

사람들은 너의 즐거움을 원하지만

너의 고통은 필요로 하지 않는다.

즐거워하라, 그러면 친구들이 늘어날 것이다.

슬퍼하라, 그러면 그들을 모두 잃고 말 것이다.

아무도 달콤한 와인은 거절하지 않지만,

그러나 인생의 쓴 잔은 혼자 마셔야 한다.

축제를 열라, 그럼 너의 집은 사람들로 넘쳐나리라

즐거움의 방들은 넓어서

길고 화려한 행렬을 들일 수 있다,

하지만 좁은 통로를 지날 때는

우리 모두는 한 줄로 지나갈 수밖에 없다.
