샌프란시스코로 2000. 1. 173
세리토스에서 일행을 만나 리무진 버스에 몸을 싣는다. 버스기사와 가이드를 보며 즐거운 여행이 되리란 예감이 든다. 또 한차례 모하비 사막을 건넌다. 사막이라고는 하지만 짙푸르고 키가 작은 특이한 나무가 중간중간 서있다. 오크데일에 있는 한국인 식당 윤스 마켓에서 점심을 먹었다.
주황 재킷을 입고 쓰레기 줍는 사람이 보인다. 잘못에 대한 벌을 받는 것이다. 창밖으로 방목장에 풀어놓은 검은 소들이 보인다. 바람개비처럼 보이는 풍력 발전소가 장관을 이룬다. 1시 10분 헤이워드를 지나간다. 둥글둥글한 산, 깃털 구름, 하룻밤 잔다. 내일은 새벽 4시에 일어나 요세미티를 향한다.
00. 1/ 14 샌프란시스코
새벽 4시에 일어나 부랴 부랴 준비하고 5시에 요세미티를 향한다. 버스에 오르자 얼마 후부터 거의가 잠든다. 그렇게 얼마 동안 가다 햄버거 집에서 햄버거 하나와 음료수 하나로 아침을 해결한다. 식사 참 시원찮다. 요세미티는 여름이 가장 관광하기 좋은 때라 한다. 지금은 겨울철이라 물이 많이 말랐다. 이른 아침이라 그런지 쌀쌀하다. 그리고 공기가 얼마나 좋은지 몸도 깨끗해지고 머리도 맑아지는 듯하다. 요세미티는 인디언 말로 욕심 많은 붉은 곰이란 뜻이다. 이곳의 곰은 음식 냄새를 맡고 캠핑 온 차를 뒤집어엎기도 한단다.
요세미티를 벗어나 샌프란스시코로 진입한다. 샌프란시스코는 안개의 도시, 히피의 도시, 호모의 도시라고 한다. 이곳엔 5개의 유명한 다리가 있다. 셀 마 타지오 다리가 가장 길다고 한다. 아마 비행기 위에서 본 것이 그 다리인가 보다. 베이브리지 다리로 차가 올라간다. 곧 샌프란시스코로 들어선단다. 그런가 보다 했다. 우 ∼ 와. 베이브리지의 정상에 막 다다랐을 때, 그 순간 샌프란시스코의 전경이 한눈에 들어왔다. 너무 아름답다.
눈 앞에 금문교가 보인다. 센스 있는 가이드 케니 김 씨는 TV 드라마 '애인'에 나오는 음악 '샌프란시스코에 올 때는 머리에 꽃을 꽂으세요'라는 내용의 곡과 'I owe you.'를 틀어준다. TV 드라마의 영상과 아름다운 샌프란시스코가 하나 되어 내가 여기에 있다는 사실에 가슴 뭉클해지며 울고 싶어 진다. 바다 위에 떠 있는 도시가 너무 아름다우며 파란 하늘에 하얀 뭉게구름이 이 도시의 아름다음을 더해준다.(적어도 이 때는 안개가 끼지 않았다. 나는 지금도 딸과 함께 비디오카메라에 담아온 샌프란시스코의 모습을 즐겨본다.) 샌프란 시소코에 UC버클리 대학이 있다. 미국의 대학을 선도하고 있으며 15명의 노벨상 수상자를 배출했다. 또한 반전 데모를 최초로 한 대학이기도 하다.
우리를 태운 차는 서서히 차이나타운을 돌아 나온다. 샌프란시스코는 우리나라의 부산과 흡사하다. 산 꼭대기까지 집이 들어서 있다. 39번 피어 투어에 참가했다. 배를 타고 금문교 밑을 지나갔다 온다. 배에 설치된 마이크에서 무슨 소린가 끊임없이 흘러나온다. 잘 못 알아듣겠다. 관광객들의 환호소리, 갈매기의 끼룩 소리, 재엽이 만한 조무래기들 떠드는 소리. 아, 속이 다 시원하다. 하늘은 눈부시게 푸르다. 금문교 , 정말 아름다운 다리다.
금문교 중간중간에 전화부스가 있다. 1년에 1,000명씩이나 이곳에서 자살을 감행한다. 너무 아름답기 때문에 이곳에서 몸을 던지나 보다. 이 전화부스는 그들의 자살을 방지하려는 상담전화란다. 금문교 저편은 소살리토라는 곳이다. 그곳은 존 스타인백의 고향이기도 하고 헤밍웨이의 집필 장소이기도 했던 곳이다. 피어 39 투어를 끝내고 몬트레이 17마일 코스로 들어간다. 유명 연예인의 별장이 있고, 우리나라 윤석화 씨의 별장도 이곳에 있다고 한다.
바닷가를 접하고 있는 고급 별장지다. 뿌연 물안개와 어우러져 파도가 출렁인다. 환상적이다. 샌스 맨 케니 김 씨는 분위기를 살리는데 천부적 소질이 있나 보다. 타이타닉의 주제곡을 조용히 틀어 감상적인 내 마음을 무진장 흔들어 놓는다. 차창밖으로 운동하는 사람, 개를 데리고 산책하는 사람이 간간이 보인다. 단지 한적한 바닷가일 뿐인 이곳을 아름답게 만드는 것은 딸기아빠 (딸+계집애), 케니 김 씨의 덕이다. 샌프란시스코의 다운타운을 돌다 보니 날이 어두워졌다. 케니 김 씨는 샌프란시스코의 야경을 보여준다며 트래져 아일랜드섬에 버스를 세웠다. 몸이 무겁긴 하지만 버스에서 내린다.
상쾌하다. 바닷물이 출렁출렁 춤을 추고 바다 건너 샌프란시스코의 아름다운 불빛이 보인다. 정말 아름답다. 이래서 모두들 샌프란시스코를 가보고 싶어 하는가 보다.
2000. 1. 15. 솔뱅
산타마리아에서 점심을 먹고 솔뱅에 들렀다. 솔뱅은 덴마크 민속촌이다. 아름답고, 동화 속 세계 같아 보인다. 그 안에는 온갖 상점으로 꽉 찼다. 지나치게 인공적인 느낌이 들어 지루하다. 솔뱅을 벗어나 산타바바라를 지나간다. 끝없는 바다. 분위기 최고다. 이렇게 3박 4일 (2박 3일이었나?) 일정으로 샌프란시스코를 갔다 왔다. (*샌프란시스코는 패키지로 다녀와서 그런지, 그 당시는 많이 듣고 즐거웠는데 나중에 기록문을 쓰려니 생각이 잘 나지 않는다.)
Jan. 13th, 2000 San Francisco
I met our tour group at Ceritos and took a limousine bus to San Francisco. I get a feeling that we will have a nice trip as I look at the bus driver and tour guide. Once again we pass through Mojavi dessert. Although it is a dessert, it has some thick green and short trees here and there.
We stopped for lunch at Yoon's Market in Oakdale. We can see people in orange coveralls picking up trash. They are working out their crimes by doing public service. I can see black cows in the field out side of my bus window. The wind power generators that resemble pinwheels provide a spectacle. We pass through Hayward at 1:10 p.m. I see round mountains and cirrus high up in the sky. We will spend the night at xxxx. Tomorrow we have to get up at 4 a.m. and go to Yosemite.
We got up at 4:00 a.m., hastly got ready and headed for Yosemite at 5:00 a.m. As soon as the* tourist get on the bus, they soon fall asleep. After a while, we had hamburgers and drinks at a fast food place for breakfast. How unsatisfying a meal it was. They say the summer is the best tour season for Yosemite. Now it's winter, maybe because of that everything seemed dry.
The air was chilly when we arrive there in early morning. The clean air cleansed my body and mind. 'Yosemite' means 'selfish red bear' in Indian. The bears smell food and flips over cars on the camping ground.
We got out of Yosemite and headed toward San Francisco. San Francisco is famous for its fog, hippies and gay community. There are five famous bridges here. The guide said the Cel Matazio Bridge is the longest. Maybe the bridge I saw from the plane was that bridge. Our bus climbed up the Bay Bridge. The guide said we will get into San Francisco soon. I acknowledged it. Wow! when the bus climbed up to the highest point of the Bay Bridge, at that very moment, San Francisco come into view. It's too beautiful. I can see the Golden Gate Bridge. Ever perceptive and catering guide Kenny Kim, played a tape of "San Francisco" with its "be sure to wear some flowers in your hair" and "I owe you", which is the theme song of TV drama "Sweetheart".
The thought of being united with my longed beautiful TV drama images of San Francisco filled my heart with emotion, and I was about to be moved to tears. The city by the Bay was so beautiful; the blue sky and smoldering white clouds enchanced her beauty. (At least, at the time, there was no fog. Even now, my daughter and I enjoy watching the video tape I made of San Francisco.)
There is UC Berkeley in San Francisco. It is a leader among American universities and colleges. It has produced 15 Nobel Prize laureates. It is also the first university or college in America to hold anti-Vietnam-War demonstrations.
Our bus made its leisurely way out of Chinatown. San Francisco is similar to our Pusan. There are houses on the top the mountains.
We joined Pier 39 tour. We went aboard a boat and went under the Golden Gate Bridge. There was an endless message on the boat's PA system. I couldn't understand it. I heard the happy sound of the tourists, the sound of sea gulls, chatting sound of children of Jae Yup's size.
Ah, I feel great. The sky is bright blue. The Golden Gate Bridge is such a beautilful bridge. They say 1,000 people try to commit suicide every year on this bridge. I guess the overwhelming beauty makes people jump into the water. There are some telephone booths on the bridge. The phone booths are there to prevent people from commtting suicide by providing counselling over the phone.
Sosalito (spelling??) is just over the Golden Gate Bridge. It is the hometown of John Steinberg and also a place where Hemingway once worked. It's a sea side villa neighborhood. Hazy fog and the undulating waves went well together. It's so fantastic. Ever perceptive and resourceful Kenny Kim had a talent for making the best of each moment. He softly played the theme song of the movie "Titanic" and it put me in a sentimental mood. I can see people jogging and walking their dogs through the window. It's Kenny Kim, the father of two daughters, that makes this plain and seculuded seaside into a beautiful and sentimental place.
It became dark as we toured downtown San Francisco. Kenny Kim stopped the bus at Treasure Island to show the night view of San Fransico to the tourists. I was so tired, but I got off the bus. I was refreshed once I got out. The waves were undulating and I can see the beautiful lights over the bay. It's so beautiful. Maybe that's why many people want to go to San Francisco.

We visited Solvang after lunch. Solvang is a Danish folk village. It was as beautiful as a storybook world. It was filled with all kind of stores. It looked too artificial, so it was boring.
We passed Santa Barbara after we left left Solvang. The endless sight of the sea put me in the top mood. I had been to San Francisco three days and four nights like this. ( Maybe it was 2 nights and 3 days. I traveled San Francisco with a package tour, so I can't remember in spite of being glad and enjoying myself.)
