작가는 숨어 있고, 관객은 서성인다
미술은 좋다. 하지만 미술시장의 문화에는 거리감이 있다. 거대한 전시장과 높은 벽 위에 대단해 보이는 것들이 줄지어 걸려 있다. 무슨 뜻인지 잘 모르겠지만, 중요하다고 하니까 그 앞에서 조용히 서성인다. 예술은 분명 가치 있다. 하지만 그 가치를 어떻게 드러내는지는 시대마다 다시 물어야 할 문제다.
작품이 벽에 걸렸다고 해서, 그 벽에 힘이 생기는 것은 아니다. 작품의 힘은 벽에서 나오지 않는다. 관객은 예술에, 예술가에게 닿고 싶어 한다. 작가들도 관객에게 더 닿고 싶어 한다. 하지만 벽 없이는 닿기 어려운 듯 보이고, 그 벽은 여러 권위로 작가들을 압도한다.
작가는 숨어 있고, 관객은 서성인다. 서로 닿을 것 같지만, 진짜 만남은 쉽지 않다. 하지 말라는 말은 많고, 하얀 벽은 지켜야 할 성역 같다. 자유롭게 펼칠 공간은 점점 줄어든다. 크면 팔리지 않고, 작으면 벽이 아깝다. 이래저래 작가들은 지쳐간다.
그래서 우리는 보여주는 방식을 ‘쉬프트’하고자 했다. 그렇다고 기존 방식을 무의미하다고 생각하지 않는다. 우리도 때로는 그 벽을 선택한다. 그 안에서도 여전히 할 말이 있기 때문이다. 하지만 이제, 다른 방향으로도 시도해보려 한다. 우리는 그 안팎에서 새로운 가능성을 함께 찾고 싶다.
진심이라면, 어떻게 닿는지는 중요하지 않다. 꼭 그 방법이 아니어도 된다. 벽이 아닌 곳에서도, 갤러리가 아닌 공간에서도, 전시가 아닌 형태로도 예술은 숨 쉬고 자란다. 우리는 비판보다 새로운 시도를 꿈꾼다. 더 직접적이고 솔직한 만남이 가능할 것이다.
우리는 더 이상 10년 뒤 어느 벽에 걸릴지 기다리지 않는다. 10년 뒤 더 나은 작가가 되고 싶은 마음보다, 지금 이 순간 작가로서 진심으로 소통하고 싶다. 이 시점에서만 할 수 있는 이야기들이 있고, 이 나이에서만 가능한 표현이 있다. 예술의 힘은 먼 미래의 약속이 아니라, 바로 지금, 현재의 진정성에서 비롯된다.

Art x Shift
Art is valuable. Yet there is a certain distance within the culture of the art market.
In vast exhibition halls, impressive works hang high on the walls. We stand quietly before them, not fully understanding their meaning, but told they are important, we linger. Art undeniably holds value, but how that value is expressed is a question that must be reconsidered with each era.
Just because a work is hung on a wall doesn’t mean the wall gains power. The strength of the work does not come from the wall. Viewers want to connect with the art, with the artist. Artists, too, want to reach their audience. But without the wall, connection seems difficult, and that very wall overwhelms artists with its authority.
Artists hide away, while viewers wander.
They seem close, but genuine encounters are rare. There are many restrictions, and the white wall feels like a sacred space that must be protected. The space where artists can freely express themselves is shrinking.
If a work is too large, it doesn’t sell; if too small, it feels like a waste of the wall. For various reasons, artists grow weary.
So, we decided to ‘shift’ the way we show our work. That doesn’t mean we dismiss traditional methods. We sometimes still choose that wall, because even within it, there is still something to say. But now, we want to try different directions. We want to explore new possibilities, both inside and outside those walls.
If the intention is sincere, how it reaches others is less important. It doesn’t have to be that one way. Art can breathe and grow beyond walls, beyond galleries, beyond exhibitions. We dream not of criticism, but of new attempts. More direct and honest encounters are possible.
We no longer wait for the day our work will hang on a wall ten years from now. More than becoming a better artist in ten years,
we want to communicate sincerely as artists right now. There are stories only this moment can tell, expressions only this age can hold. The power of art comes not from promises of the distant future, but from the authenticity of the present moment.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다.
아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
