작품을 향한 두 마음
Two Hearts Toward Art
예술가는 열매를 맺는다. 이것이 예술가의 몫이다. 그러나 열매만으로는 충분하지 않다. 어떻게 보여주느냐에 따라 그 의미는 달라진다. 같은 그림도 어떤 조명을 받느냐, 어떤 색의 벽에 걸리느냐에 따라 전혀 다른 표정을 짓는다. 작품이 가장 중요한 뿌리이지만, 기획은 그 열매가 더 온전히 드러나도록 돕는 자리다.
그래서 예술가와 기획자는 작품을 함께 들어 올리는 두 손과 같다. 쟁반을 들 때 시선이 한쪽으로만 쏠리면 기울어져 결국 안의 것이 쏟아지듯, 두 시선이 모두 작품에 대한 애정으로 모일 때 비로소 작품은 살아난다. 한쪽의 애정이나 노력이 부족하면 작품은 제 힘을 다 펼치지 못한다. 결국 두 사람의 마음이 어느 쪽으로 향하느냐가 작품이 어떻게 드러나는지를 좌우한다.
이를 위해서는 무엇보다 진실한 소통이 필요하다. 작가는 작품 속에 담긴 마음을 솔직히 나누고, 기획자는 그 이야기를 깊이 들어야 한다. 그 과정에서 기획자는 작품의 맥락을 이해하고, 작가는 애정 어린 질문을 통해 스스로 만든 작품의 본질에 더 가까이 다가간다. 때로는 그런 시선과 질문이 작가조차 미처 닿지 못했던 답을 열어준다.
“이 전시 기획 참 좋다”는 감탄은 작품이 더욱 빛날 때 나오고, “이 작품 참 아름답다”는 감탄은 기획이 제 역할을 다했을 때 나온다. 완벽한 열매가 알맞은 그릇에 놓일 때, 열매와 그릇은 서로를 더욱 빛나게 한다. 아무리 세련된 기법이라도 작품에 대한 애정이 없다면 관객은 금세 느낀다. 능력은 다를 수 있어도, 진정성은 언제나 드러나기 마련이다.
전시장에 들어서면 기획자의 애정과 작가의 선택이 어떤 균형을 이루었는지 관객은 은연중에 느낀다. 결국 전시는 모든 것을 드러내는 자리다. 그러나 작가와 기획자가 작품이 잘 드러나기를 바라는 마음을 함께 모을 때, 그 따뜻한 울림은 고스란히 관객에게 전해진다. 그 작품에 대한 몰입은 결국 “누가 작가일까, 누가 기획자일까”라는 질문으로 확장된다. 그렇게 작품의 매력을 발견하고, 그것을 가장 진실하게 전할 방법을 찾아가는 과정에서 예술은 온전한 빛을 낸다.

Art x Shift
An artist bears fruit. This is the artist’s calling. Yet the fruit alone is not enough. Its meaning changes depending on how it is shown. The same painting can take on a completely different expression depending on the light it receives or the color of the wall on which it hangs. The work itself is the essential root, but curation is the place where the fruit is revealed more fully.
Thus, the artist and the curator are like two hands lifting a tray together. If the gaze of one hand drifts and the tray tilts, what is carried will spill. Only when both gazes rest on the work with equal affection does the piece truly come alive. If either side’s care or effort is lacking, the work cannot unfold its full strength. In the end, the direction of their hearts determines how the work is revealed.
For this, genuine communication is essential. The artist must share honestly what is held within the work, and the curator must listen deeply. In this process, the curator comes to grasp the context of the piece, while the artist, through questions filled with affection, draws closer to the essence of what they have created. At times, such perspectives and questions open answers the artist themselves had not yet reached.
The exclamation “This exhibition is so well curated” arises when the work shines even brighter, while “This work is truly beautiful” is heard when the curation has fulfilled its role. Just as a perfect fruit placed in the right vessel makes both more radiant, the vessel enhances the fruit and the fruit beautifies the vessel. No matter how refined the methods or sophisticated the design, without genuine love for the work the audience will sense it immediately. Skill may vary, but sincerity is always revealed.
Upon entering an exhibition, viewers naturally sense the balance between the curator’s devotion and the artist’s choices. In the end, exhibitions reveal everything. Yet when both artist and curator unite in the desire for the work to be seen at its best, that warmth is passed on directly to the audience. Immersion in the work eventually expands into the question: “Who is the artist, and who is the curator?” In discovering the beauty of the work and seeking the most truthful way to reveal it, art shines with its full light.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
