열심이 숨기는 것
What Diligence Hides
열심이라는 단어는 방향을 묻지 않는다. 그래서 우리는 이 말로 자신을 긍정적으로 설명하면서도 정작 어디로 향하고 있는지는 쉽게 지나친다. 많이 움직였다는 사실과 쌓인 시간이 어느새 잘 살았다는 증거처럼 느껴지기도 한다. 열심은 삶을 설명해 주는 것 같지만, 삶의 방향까지 밝혀 주지는 않는다.
열심히 기도했다, 열심히 일했다, 열심히 사랑했다고 말할 때 그 열심이 향한 곳은 잘 보이지 않는다. 내 안정을 향했는지, 타인의 인정을 향했는지, 아니면 정말 다른 무엇을 향했는지는 묻히고, 같은 행동과 같은 수고가 하나의 가치로 묶인다. 무엇을 향해 움직였는지는 흐려지고 열심히 했다는 말만 남는다.
하지만 마음이 붙든 대상은 결국 선택으로 드러난다. 선택은 조금씩 쌓이고, 누적된 방향은 어느새 도착지를 만든다. 누구도 밀어 넣지 않아도 삶은 붙들어 온 것의 끝에 이르게 된다. 그래서 겉으로는 같은 열심의 행위라도 전혀 다른 자리에 도착할 수 있다.
우리는 가장 좋아하는 것에 최선을 다하고 좋은 것을 주려 한다. 그런데 그것을 가장 좋은 것이라 여기는 이유가, 바로 그것에 가장 의존하고 있기 때문일 수 있다는 사실은 쉽게 돌아보지 않는다. 결국 드러나는 것은 기준이 아니라 나의 중심이다. 좋은 것의 기준은 어느새 검토 없이 굳어버린다.
어쩌면 우리는 무엇에 의존하고 있는지를 열심이라는 행위 속에서 드러내고 있는지도 모른다. 열심히 했기 때문에 이루어졌다고 말하고 싶어지고, 열심이 결과를 정당화해 준다고 믿는다. 그러나 정말 의존하는
대상이 분명할 때는 열심이 필요 없다. 말하지 않아도 삶은, 조용히 그러나 분명하게, 내가 어디에 기대어
서 있는지를 드러낸다.

Art x Shift
The word diligence does not ask about direction. So we use it to describe ourselves positively while easily overlooking where we are actually heading. The amount of movement and the time accumulated begin to feel like proof that we have lived well. Diligence seems to explain life, but it does not reveal its direction.
When we say we prayed diligently, worked diligently, loved diligently, the direction of that diligence is rarely visible. Whether it was aimed at our own security, at the approval of others, or at something else entirely becomes blurred. Different actions and different efforts are gathered under a single value. What we were moving toward fades, and only the statement that we tried hard remains.
But what the heart is holding onto is eventually revealed through choice. Choices accumulate, and their accumulated direction quietly forms a destination. No one needs to push us there. Life arrives on its own at the end of what we have been holding onto. That is why actions that look equally diligent on the surface can lead to completely different places.
We give our best to what we like most, and we try to offer what we believe is good. Yet we rarely ask whether we call it good simply because we depend on it the most. In the end, what is revealed is not our standard but our center. The standard of what is good quietly hardens without examination.
Perhaps diligence itself reveals what we depend on. We want to say things happened because we worked hard, and we believe diligence justifies the outcome. But when what we depend on is truly clear, diligence is no longer necessary. Life does not need explanation. Quietly yet unmistakably, it reveals where we are standing and what we are leaning on.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에 변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
