재능은 값싸고 열정은 타버린다
Talent Is Cheap, and Passion Burns Out
예술은 열정으로 하는 것도 재능으로 하는 것도 아니다. 재능은 값싸고 열정은 결국 타버린다. 그 둘을 원동력으로 삼는다면 차라리 태워버리거나 없애버리는 것이 낫다. 열정이 사라지고 재능이 상관없어진 자리에 무엇이 남아 있는지가 진짜 질문이다. 그 자리에 자아가 서지 못한다면 예술은 태어나지 않는다.
재능과 열정을 빼냈더니 빈 봉투만 남았다면 차라리 잘 된 것이다. 봉투에 무엇인가를 담아야 할 것 같아서 봉투를 들고 헤매고 있다면 봉투도 버려라. 꿈을 향한 재능과 열정이라는 이름으로 봉투에 뭐라도 담고 있지는 않은지 돌아보라. 봉투 없이 헤매는 것이 재능과 열정으로 채운 봉투를 들고 있는 것보다 낫다.
열정이라는 말로 포장하면 모든 것이 그럴듯해 보인다. 욕심도 방향 없음도 구조의 부재도 가려진다. 좋아하는 마음과 열정이 있다는 말은 묵묵히 갈 길을 가는 태도를 대단해 보이게 만들지만 그것은 착각일 수 있다. 봉투를 채워야 한다는 마음으로 하는 예술은 결국 아무거나 담아버린 봉투에 불과하다.
할 말이 없다면 언제든지 멈춰도 된다. 세상의 구조 위에 값싼 열정과 재능을 펴 바른다고 해서 진짜가 되지는 않는다. 열정이 사라지고 재능이 상관없어진 자리에서야 비로소 예술은 시작된다. 이제 세상의 구조를 도구로 삼고 재료로 삼아 해야 할 일들을 해나가는 것이다. 봉투는 할 말이 손에 넘쳐날 때 필요할 뿐이다. 봉투를 들고 헤매지 말라.

Art is not made by passion, nor by talent. Talent is cheap, and passion eventually burns out. If you take those two as your driving force, it is better to burn them away or discard them altogether. The real question is what remains once passion has disappeared and talent no longer matters. If the self cannot stand in that place, art is never born.
If you remove talent and passion and only an empty bag remains, that is actually a good sign. If you are wandering around holding the bag because it feels like you must put something in it, then throw the bag away as well. Ask yourself whether you are putting anything into it under the name of dreams, talent, or passion. Wandering without a bag is better than carrying a bag filled with talent and passion.
When wrapped in the word passion, everything looks convincing. Greed, lack of direction, and absence of structure are all concealed. Saying that you like something and feel passionate about it can make quietly going your way seem admirable, but that can be an illusion. Art made with the intention of filling a bag is nothing more than a bag stuffed with whatever was available.
If you have nothing to say, you are free to stop at any time. Spreading cheap passion and talent over the structure of the world does not make something real. Only when passion has faded and talent no longer matters does art truly begin. From there, you take the structure of the world as a tool and as material, and you do the work that must be done. A bag is needed only when what you have to say overflows your hands. Do not wander while clutching a bag.
