열매는 나무를 숨길 수 없다.
Fruit Cannot Hide the Tree
신앙이 말하는 열매 맺음은 시간이 오래 걸리는 일이 아니다. 우리는 믿음을 오래 지키면 계절이 지나 언젠가 열매를 맺을 것이라 생각한다. 그러나 성경은 열매를 보면 나무를 안다고 말한다. 열매는 기다림이 아니라 지금의 드러남이다. 말의 방향, 마음의 결, 반응의 온도가 모두 가지 끝에 달린 열매처럼 이미 드러나고 있다.
그 순간 어떻게 반응했는지, 어떤 마음이 먼저 올라왔는지는 본인이 가장 먼저 감지한다. 물론 인간은 자신을 속이는 존재다. 분노를 정의로 포장하고, 두려움을 신중함이라 부르며, 자신의 동기를 선의로 착각한다. 하지만 성령이 조명하실 때 비로소 보이는 것들이 있다. 열매를 알아보려는 눈 자체가 은혜다. 스스로 돌아볼 수 있다면, 그것은 이미 성령이 그 자리에 계신다는 신호다.
전기가 통할 때 전기는 연결된 곳 끝까지 흘러간다. 전선의 어느 지점에서 멈추거나 희석되지 않는다. 손을 대는 순간 전체에 흐르고, 손을 떼는 즉시 사라지며, 다시 대는 순간 다시 흐른다. 원천의 힘은 가지 끝까지 자신의 출처를 숨기지 않는다.
예수님은 말씀하셨다. “나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지라. 그가 내 안에, 내가 그 안에 거하면 사람이 열매를 많이 맺나니 나를 떠나서는 너희가 아무것도 할 수 없음이라.” 열매는 가지가 스스로 만들어내는 것이 아니다. 붙어 있기 때문에 흘러오는 것이다. 원천이 끊기지 않기 때문에 내가 손을 댈 수 있고, 끊겼다 느껴지는 순간에도 알아차림으로 돌아설 수 있다.
인간관계에서 서로의 사정과 이유는 각자에게 언제나 정당하다. 그 이해가 중심이 되면 관계는 결국 서사의 경쟁이 된다. 그러나 더 근본적인 질문이 있다. 그 순간 나는 붙어 있었는가. 전기가 흐르고 있었는가. 무조건 참으라는 말이 아니다. 감정을 억누르라는 말도 아니다. 다만 반응하기 전이나 후에 내가 어디에 연결되어 있었는지를 돌아보라는 것이다. 돌아보려는 순간 이미 돌아간 것이다.

Faith does not speak of bearing fruit as something that takes a long time. We often think that if we hold on to belief long enough, a season will pass and fruit will eventually appear. But Scripture says that a tree is known by its fruit. Fruit is not a matter of waiting but of present revelation. The direction of our words, the grain of our heart, and the temperature of our reactions are already visible like fruit hanging at the end of a branch.
In that moment, how we reacted and what rose first in our heart are sensed by us before anyone else. Of course, human beings are capable of deceiving themselves. We dress anger up as justice, call fear prudence, and mistake our own motives for goodness. Yet there are things that can only be seen when the Holy Spirit sheds light on them. Even the desire to discern fruit is itself grace. If we are able to turn and examine ourselves, it is already a sign that the Spirit is present there.
When electricity flows, it runs to the very end of whatever is connected. It does not stop or weaken at some point along the wire. The moment a hand touches, it flows through the whole body. The moment the hand is removed, it disappears. When the hand touches again, it flows again. The source does not hide itself, even at the furthest end.
Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” Fruit is not something the branch produces on its own. It flows because it is connected. Because the source is not cut off, we are able to reach out again. And even in moments when we feel disconnected, awareness itself becomes the way back.
In human relationships, each person’s circumstances and reasons are always justified to themselves. When that understanding becomes central, relationships turn into a competition of narratives. But there is a more fundamental question. In that moment, was I connected. Was the current flowing. This is not a call to endure everything, nor a demand to suppress emotion. It is simply an invitation to look, before reacting or after reacting, at where we were connected. The moment we turn to look is already the moment we have begun to return.
