능력 주소서 아멘
Grant me strength. Amen.
크리스천은 능력이 있어야 한다고 말하는 이들이 있다. 하나님께서 능력을 주신다는 말에 담긴 그 능력을 세상의 언어로 풀어 읽기 때문이다. 선택이라는 단어 또한 자신의 특별함이나 권한으로 해석해 버린다. 죽은 이를 살리고 눈을 뜨게 하고 물 위를 걷는 사건들 역시 초능력을 발휘하는 슈퍼히어로의 맥락으로 소비된다. 그렇게 사람들은 부어주심을 기다리며 끊임없이 생명 연장을 위한 것들을 경건하게 구한다.
하지만 우리가 쓰는 단어는 이미 오염되었고 본질적 의미를 잃은 지 오래다. 문제는 단어가 아니라 그것을 해석하는 시선이다. 곧 필터 자체가 이미 깨끗하지 않다는 사실을 먼저 이해해야 한다. 오목렌즈로 세상을 보고 있는데 아무리 평평한 세상이라 한들 그것이 무슨 의미가 있겠는가. 능력 주심에서 말하는 능력을 우리는 무엇으로 해석하고 있는가.
생명 앞에 서 있으면서도 우리는 내가 생각하는 생명을 따로 구한다. 물을 떠놓고 물을 달라고 빈다. 그 물을 그냥 마시면 되는데 받아서 마시겠다는 태도는 결국 세상적 능력으로 마시겠다는 말에 불과하다. 생명은 이미 주어졌는데 우리는 여전히 더 강한 방식으로 살아내기를 요구한다. 생명 자체보다 그것을 다루는 힘에 집착한다.
선택되었다는 말은 내가 특별하다는 뜻이 아니다. 선택하셨다는 말은 권한과 구원이 하나님께 있다는 선언이다. 물 위를 걸으셨다는 것은 물이 심판을 의미하기에 그 심판에 들지 않으셨다는 고백이며 죽은 이를 살리신 사건은 생명의 권한이 하나님께 있음을 드러내는 표지다. 장님의 눈을 뜨게 하신 것 또한 우리의 무지함과 성령에 의한 인도하심을 가리킨다.
성경이 말하는 저주는 당하는 형벌이 아니라 자유 선택의 결과다. 그분이 기준점이심을 드러내며 기준을 인간 자신에게 둘 때 겪게 되는 선택의 결과를 보여주셨을 뿐이다. 우리가 해석해 낸 믿음의 크기나 선택받은 자들의 능력이 아니라 하나님 자신이 기준이라는 선언이다.
성경을 세상의 언어로 해석하는 일은 팝송을 들으며 한국어처럼 들리는 부분을 한국말로 이해하는 것과 같다. 내가 오목렌즈를 쓰고 있다는 사실을 깨닫고, 혼자서는 제대로 걸어낼 수 없다는 것을 인정하며, 도움을 받아 걷겠다는 마음을 갖는 것. 그것이야말로 성경이 말하는 진짜 능력이 시작되는 자리이다.

There are those who say that Christians must have power. They read the power God gives through the language of the world. The word chosen is also interpreted as personal distinction or authority. Raising the dead, opening blind eyes, walking on water are consumed as spectacles of a superhero narrative. In doing so, people wait for an outpouring and devoutly seek ways to prolong life.
But the words we use have long been contaminated and have lost their original meaning. The problem is not the words themselves but the way we see through them. The filter itself is already unclear, and this must be acknowledged first. If one looks at the world through a concave lens, what meaning could a flat ground possibly have. How then do we interpret the power that is said to be given.
Standing before life itself, we still seek a life of our own imagining. We place water before us and ask again for water. The water could simply be drunk, yet the posture of asking to receive it turns life into a matter of power. Life has already been given, yet we demand a stronger way of living. We become attached not to life itself but to the control of it.
To be chosen does not mean that I am special. To say that God chooses is to declare that authority and salvation belong to Him. Walking on water is a confession that He does not fall under judgment, for water signifies judgment. Raising the dead reveals that authority over life belongs to God. Opening the eyes of the blind points to our ignorance and to guidance by the Holy Spirit.
The curse spoken of in Scripture is not a punishment imposed but the result of free choice. It reveals that God Himself is the point of reference and shows what follows when that reference is placed in the human self. It is not the size of our faith or the power of those who believe themselves chosen that serves as the standard, but God Himself. This is the declaration.
To interpret Scripture through the language of the world is like listening to a pop song and understanding the parts that sound familiar as if they were one’s own language. It begins with realizing that we are wearing a distorted lens, admitting that we cannot walk rightly on our own, and choosing to walk with help. That is where the true power Scripture speaks of begins.
