뱉어버린 껌
Chewed and Spat Out
껌에 단 물이 빠지면 뱉는다. 예수님이 오셨을 때 물을 포도주로 바꾸셨고 병을 고치셨고 죽은 자를 살리셨으며 수천 명을 먹이셨다. 달디단 기적들이 넘쳐났다. 성경은 말한다. “예수께서 행하신 일이 이 외에도 많으니 만일 낱낱이 기록된다면 이 세상이라도 그 기록된 책을 두기에 부족할 줄 아노라.”
사람들은 따라갔다. 제자들도 따라갔고 수천 명이 한 자리에 앉아 공짜 떡을 먹었다. 그러나 예수님은 그 한가운데서 경고하셨다. 사람들이 자신을 따르는 이유를 이미 알고 계셨기 때문이다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 나를 찾는 것은 표적을 본 까닭이 아니요 떡을 먹고 배부른 까닭이로다.” 예수님은 달콤했다.
그러다 껌에 단물이 빠지기 시작한다. 군인들이 잡으러 왔고 수배가 내려졌으며 채찍에 살이 찢어졌다. 가시 면류관을 쓰고 직접 십자가를 끌고 걸어가셨다. 창으로 찔러 피와 물을 빼냈고 주먹질과 조롱이 쏟아졌다. 네가 하나님의 아들이면 내려오라고, 스스로를 구원해 보라고 외쳤다. 속옷을 나누어 가지고 비웃었다. 제자들은 모두 도망갔고 베드로도 보이지 않는다.
씹다 뱉은 껌을 보면서 예수님이 떠올랐다. 내 침이 가득한 껌. 단물은 내가 다 빨아먹고 아무것도 남지 않은 껌. 이빨 자국이 가득한 껌. 바닥에 납작하게 붙은 껌. 씹다가 뱉어 버린 껌에서 나는 그 순간이 느껴지는 것 같았다. 단물 빠진 껌을 뱉는다고 해도 이상할 것은 하나도 없다.
껌을 형상으로 예수님을 떠올리는 작품을 만들었다. 나도 그들과 다를 바 없다. 달 때까지만 씹고 버린다. 나 또한 달 때까지만 씹히고 버려진다. 누구를 비판하려는 이야기가 아니다. 그냥 이것이 세상이라는 것이다. 하지만 예수님은 다르다. 우리가 이런데도 품으신다. 다 알고도 품으신다. 단물이 하나도 없는데도 절대 우리를 뱉지 않으신다.

When the sweetness is gone from gum, you spit it out. When Jesus came, He turned water into wine, healed the sick, raised the dead, and fed thousands. Sweet miracles overflowed. The Bible says, “Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.”
People followed Him. The disciples followed, and thousands sat down together and ate bread for free. But right in the middle of it Jesus warned them. He already knew why people were following Him. “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.” Jesus was sweet.
Then the sweetness in the gum began to fade. Soldiers came to arrest Him. A warrant went out. His flesh was torn by whips. A crown of thorns was placed on His head and He carried the cross Himself. A spear pierced Him and blood and water came out. They punched Him, mocked Him, and shouted, “If you are the Son of God, come down and save yourself.” They divided His clothes and laughed at Him. All the disciples ran away, and even Peter was nowhere to be seen.
Looking at a piece of chewed gum, I thought of Jesus. Gum filled with my saliva. The sweetness already sucked out by me. A gum with nothing left. A gum covered with teeth marks. A gum flattened on the ground. Looking at that chewed and spat gum, I felt like I could sense that moment. There is nothing strange about spitting out gum once the sweetness is gone.
So I made a work in the shape of gum that made me think of Jesus. I am no different from them. I chew only while it is sweet and then throw it away. And I too am chewed only while I am sweet and then thrown away. This is not a criticism of anyone. It is simply what the world is. But Jesus is different. Even though we are like this, He still receives us. He knows everything and still receives us. Even when there is no sweetness left in us, He never spits us out.
