예측이 주는 안정감
The Comfort of Predictability
미대를 다니다 보면 작품에 대한 프레젠테이션을 하고 아티스트 스테이트먼트를 쓴다. 내가 무엇을 하고 있는지, 어떤 작가가 될 것인지 생각을 정리하고 정의하고 결정해야 한다. 대학교는 4년 안에, 대학원은 3년 안에 모든 것을 정하라고 계속 압박을 넣는다. 그 압박 속에서 그럴듯한 것들이 나온다.
그렇게 나를 캐내고 찾아낸 것들을 들고 세상에 나오면 몇 년 안에 모든 것이 바뀐다. 생각도, 가치관도, 심지어 내가 정말 작가가 될 것인가, 내가 할 말이 있는가라는 질문까지 끌어안고 세상을 마주하게 된다. 세상은 다시 묻는다. 그래서 진짜로 어쩔 거냐고. 이제 10년 정도 안에 모든 것이 정해져야 한다. 학교에서 묻던 질문은 사라지지 않는다.
시스템은 원래 그렇다. 예측 가능한 것들을 만들고 그것을 이루면 안정감을 준다. 우리는 학교에서 갤러리로, 사회로, 세계로 점점 더 커다란 시스템에 편입된다. 그곳에서 또 새로운 방법을 배우고 자신을 정립하며 스스로 믿어내어 진짜가 되어야 한다.
시스템은 커졌고 방법은 넘쳐난다. 하지만 굴러가는 방식은 그대로다. 이젠 SNS도 해야 하고, 어떻게 잘 운영하는지, 어떻게 좋은 브랜드가 되는지, 진짜 작가가 되는 방법과 세상에서 A를 받는 포맷을 또 배워야 한다. 하지만 그 끝은 어디일까. 우리는 시스템이 예측해 준 안정감을 따라가고 있는 건 아닐까.
하지만 시스템이 말하던 성공은 추상적인 개념이 된 지 오래다. 예측 가능한 시스템이 주는 안정감을 따라 우리는 여기까지 왔다. 밖에서 보기에는 여전히 그럴듯해 보이지만 이곳은 이미 정글이 된 지 오래다. 길은 사라졌고 예측을 벗어난 미래 앞에서 모두 당황하고 있다. 이제 어떻게 나가야 할까. 이것을 알아차렸다면 우리는 이미 나온 것이다. 드디어 생각지도 못했던 새로운 일들을 맞이할 준비가 된 것이다.

When you study art, you present your work and write artist statements. You are expected to organize your thoughts, define what you are doing, and decide what kind of artist you will become. In four years of undergraduate school, or three years of graduate school, you are constantly pressured to figure everything out. Under that pressure, convincing answers begin to emerge.
But when you step into the world carrying those things you once dug out of yourself, everything changes within a few years. Your thoughts change. Your values change. Even the questions of whether you will truly become an artist, or whether you have something to say at all, follow you as you face the world. And the world asks again: so what are you actually going to do? Now it feels as if everything must be decided within the next ten years. The questions that school once asked do not disappear.
Systems work the way systems do. They create things that can be predicted, and when those predictions are fulfilled, they offer a sense of stability. From school to galleries, to society, and eventually to the global art world, we are gradually absorbed into larger and larger systems. Within them we learn new methods, shape ourselves, and must believe in what we present until it becomes real.
The systems have grown and the methods have multiplied, but the mechanism remains the same. Now we are told we must manage social media, learn how to run it well, how to build a good brand, how to become a “real” artist, and even learn the formats that earn an A in the wider world. But where does it end? Are we simply following the sense of stability that the system predicted for us?
But the success the system once promised has long since become an abstract idea. We arrived here by following the sense of stability offered by predictable systems. From the outside it may still look convincing, but inside it has long since become a jungle. The paths have disappeared, and everyone stands uncertain before a future that has moved beyond prediction. So how do we step out? The moment we recognize this, we are already outside. At last, we are ready to face things we could never have imagined before.
