앞서지 말라
Do Not Walk Ahead
우리는 보통 리더가 되려 한다. 앞서 있는 자리에 서고 싶어 하고 뒤에서 따라오는 사람이 많을수록 성공한 삶이라고 말한다. 그러나 하나님은 우리에게 따라오라고 하신다. 그렇다면 따른다는 것은 무엇일까.
따른다는 것은 우선 앞에 서지 않는다는 뜻이다. 앞에 서지 않는다는 것은 앞에 선 분을 믿는다는 뜻이다. 누군가의 뒤를 따라가는 일은 신뢰 없이는 할 수 없다. 내가 모든 것을 이해하고 확신했기 때문이 아니다. 불확실한 현실 속에서도 앞에 계신 분을 의지할 수 있기 때문에 뒤에 서는 것이다.
그러나 따라가는 일은 그분이 믿을 만한 분이라는 사실만으로 완성되지 않는다. 동시에 내가 스스로 믿을 만하지 않다는 사실도 깨달아야 한다. 내가 스스로 믿을 만하다고 생각하는 순간 사람은 계속 앞서게 되기 때문이다. 자신의 판단과 경험과 지혜를 더 신뢰하게 된다. 그래서 성경은 말한다. 너는 마음을 다하여 여호와를 신뢰하고 네 명철을 의지하지 말라.
따라간다는 것은 율법을 따라 완벽해져야 한다는 뜻이 아니다. 오히려 그 반대에 가깝다. 옳고 그름을 끊임없이 판단하며 스스로를 몰아넣는 자리가 아니라 판단을 내려놓는 자리다. 무엇이 옳은지를 계산하며 길을 선택하는 삶이 아니라 앞에 계신 분의 뒤를 걷는 삶이다. 따라가는 자리에는 판단할 필요도 권한도 없다. 그 자리는 옳음을 증명하려는 자리가 아니라 신뢰로 따라가는 자리이기 때문이다.
보이지 않는 하나님을 따라오라는 말은 어렵게 들린다. 시키는 대로 하라는 것인지 성경대로 완벽히 살라는 것인지 무엇을 어떻게 따라야 하는지 막막하다. 그러나 나는 따라오라는 말을 앞서지 말라는 말로 들었다. 네가 길을 만들려고 애쓰지 말라는 뜻으로 들렸다. 나에게 안심하라는 말처럼 들렸다. 걱정하지 말고 나를 믿어보라는 말처럼 들렸다.

We usually try to become leaders. We want to stand in front, and we call it a successful life when many people are following behind us. But God tells us to follow. Then what does it mean to follow?
To follow first means not to stand in front. Not standing in front means trusting the One who is already there. Following behind someone is impossible without trust. It is not because I understand everything or have complete certainty. It is because, in the midst of an uncertain reality, I can rely on the One who walks ahead of me.
Yet following is not complete simply because He is trustworthy. I must also realize that I myself am not trustworthy. The moment I believe that I can trust my own judgment completely, I begin to step ahead again. I start relying more on my own reasoning, experience, and wisdom. That is why Scripture says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.”
Following does not mean becoming perfect by obeying the law. In fact, it is closer to the opposite. It is not a place where I constantly judge right and wrong and push myself into perfection. It is a place where judgment is laid down. Instead of calculating what is right and choosing my own path, it is a life of walking behind the One who goes before me. The one who follows has neither the need nor the authority to decide the way. It is not a place where righteousness is proven but a place where trust walks.
Being told to follow an invisible God can sound difficult. It can feel like a command to simply do as you are told, or to live perfectly according to Scripture. It leaves us wondering what exactly we are supposed to follow and how we are supposed to do it. But I heard the words “follow me” differently. I heard them as “do not go ahead.” I heard them as “stop trying to make the path yourself.” To me it sounded like reassurance. Like someone saying, do not worry. Try trusting me.
