설탕은 짜지지 않는다.
Sugar Doesn’t Turn Salty
믿으려 한다는 것은 아직 믿어지지 않는다는 뜻이다. 믿어지지 않는데 믿으려고 애쓰지 말아라. 억지로 믿으려 하면 결국 스스로를 세뇌해야 하고 그렇게 만들어진 믿음은 반드시 흔들리다 주저앉는다. 믿음은 의지나 결단으로 버티는 힘이 아니다.
믿음은 누가 아니라고 말해도 여전히 맞는 것이다. 그래서 아는 것과 믿는 것은 서로 다른 길이 아니라 같은 길 위에 있다. 먼저 알아야만 믿을 수 있다. 그래서 성경은 믿음은 들음에서 난다고 말하고 복음은 전해져야 하는 자리에 놓여 있다.
믿어지지 않는 자리에서 죄책 할 필요도 좌절할 이유도 없다. 우리는 태어나면서부터 세상을 배우며 살아왔다. 보이는 것조차 온전히 이해하지 못하는 존재가 보이지 않는 하나님을 감정만으로 이해할 수 있다고 기대하는 것은 무리다. 이해되지 않는다면 믿으려 애쓸 것이 아니라 물어야 한다.
설탕은 달고 소금은 짜다. 알게 되면 믿으려 애쓸 필요가 없어진다. 누군가 설탕이 짜다고 말해도 우리는 쉽게 흔들리지 않는다. 진짜 그런가, 내가 잘못 알고 있는 건 아닐까 하고 묻지 않는다. 흔들리지 않는다는 것은 감정의 문제가 아니라, 진실을 알고 있는가에 더 가깝다.
성경은 영이신 하나님의 기록이기에 이해되지 않는 부분이 있는 것이 당연하다. 그러나 성경은 또한 성령님께서 깨닫게 하신다고 말한다. 이해 없이 붙잡은 믿음은 감정에 따라 쉽게 흔들린다. 그래서 모른다는 자리에서 묻고, 따지고, 이해하게 된 것들은 쉽게 무너지지 않는다. 설탕이 누군가의 말 때문에 짜지지 않는 것처럼, 알게 된 진리는 말로 바뀌지 않는다.

Trying to believe means it is not yet believable. When something is not believable, do not force yourself to believe it. Forced belief eventually turns into self indoctrination, and that kind of belief will always shake and collapse. Faith is not something sustained by willpower or decision.
Faith remains true even when others say it is not. That is why knowing and believing are not two separate paths but one and the same. One must know in order to believe. This is why Scripture says that faith comes from hearing, and why the gospel exists to be proclaimed.
There is no need for guilt or despair in the place where belief does not come easily. We are beings who have spent our lives learning the visible world. Expecting to fully grasp an invisible God through emotion alone is unreasonable. When something is not understood, the answer is not to try harder to believe, but to ask.
Sugar is sweet, and salt is salty. Once we come to know this, we no longer need to force ourselves to believe it. Even if someone says that sugar is salty, we are not easily shaken. We do not immediately ask whether it might be true or whether we might be mistaken. Being unshaken is not really a matter of emotion, but of what we know.
Because the Bible is a record of God, who is Spirit, it is natural that there are parts we do not immediately understand. Yet the Bible also says that the Spirit helps us understand. Faith held without understanding easily rises and falls with our emotions. But what we come to understand by asking, wrestling, and seeking from a place of not knowing does not collapse easily. Just as sugar does not become salty because someone says it is, truth once known does not change by words.
