왜 선악과 나무를 두셔서
Why Did God Place the Tree There
창세기를 읽다 보면 이런 질문이 생긴다. 왜 애초에 하나님은 선악과 나무를 만들어 놓으셨냐고. 왜 인간을 시험에 들게 하셨냐고. 그냥 만들지 않으면 되는 것 아니냐고. 그런데 우리는 같은 질문을 다른 곳에는 하지 않는다.
누군가 사람을 죽였을 때, 우리는 왜 사람이 죽을 수 있냐고 묻지 않는다. 죽이지 않을 선택이 있었기 때문이다. 선악과도 마찬가지다. 문제는 나무의 존재가 아니라 선택이다.
하나님은 인간을 강제로 선하게 만들지 않으셨다. 선택할 수 있는 존재로 만드셨다. 그 선택은 신을 십자가에 못 박을 수 있을 만큼, 이쪽 끝에서 저쪽 끝까지 자유하다. 인간은 자유롭게 선택하지만, 그 선택의 결과 또한 살아내야 한다.
삶은 자유로운 선택 위에 놓여 있다. 떠나는 것도, 머무르는 것도. 믿겠다는 것도, 믿지 않겠다는 것도. 우리가 자유롭게 선택할 수 없다면, 우리의 진심은 설 자리를 잃는다.
선택에는 기준이 필요하다. 기준 없는 선택은 없다. 선악과는 무엇이 기준인가를 묻는다. 선악과를 딸 때, 무엇이 기준이었는가.

When reading Genesis, a question often arises. Why did God place the tree of the knowledge of good and evil there in the first place? Why allow humanity to be tested? Would it not have been better not to create it at all?
Yet we do not ask the same question elsewhere. When someone kills another person, we do not ask why humans were made capable of dying. Because there was a choice not to kill. The tree is no different. The issue is not the existence of the tree, but the act of choosing.
God did not create humanity to be good by force. He created beings capable of choice. That choice is free enough to crucify God Himself. Human beings choose freely, and must also live with the consequences of those choices.
Life rests upon free will. To leave or to remain. To believe or not to believe. If we were not free to choose, sincerity would have no place to stand.
Every choice has a standard. There is no such thing as a choice without one. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil asks a single question. When we took the fruit, what was our standard?
