사랑은 조건이 아니라 방향에 대한 결정이다.
Love is not a condition, but a decision
위는 아래를 드러내고, 아래는 위를 드러낸다. 사랑은 고난을 드러내고, 고난은 사랑을 드러낸다. 빛이 어둠을 통해 선명해지듯, 사랑은 아름답게 이해되는 자리보다 이해되지 않는 고난의 자리에서 더 또렷하게 드러난다. 아무도 없는 고통 속에서도 남아 있을 때, 끝내 떠나지 않을 때, 그때 비로소 사랑은 드러난다.
사랑의 본질은 감정이 아니라 연결이다. 끊어졌는가, 끊어지지 않았는가. 고난의 본질은 끊어짐이기에 관계가 무너지고 사람들은 떠나간다. 결국 혼자 남는 곳. 그 어둠 속에서도 방향을 유지하는 것, 끝까지 머무르는 것. 그때 비로소 끊어지지 않은 연결이 드러난다.
십자가는 가장 낮고 가장 수치스러운 고난의 자리에서 하나님이 우리를 향하신 변하지 않는 사랑이 드러난 곳이다. 이해되지 않는 고난 속에서도 방향을 바꾸지 않는 것, 떠나면 끝낼 수 있는 그 고난 가운데 머무는 것. 마치 전쟁통에서도 아이를 놓지 않는 부모처럼. 사랑은 조건이 아니라 방향에 대한 결정이다.
견딜 수 없어도 하나님은 우리를 향해 서 계신다. 상황에 따라 포기하거나 끊어내지 않는 것. 우리가 받는 사랑은 언제나 분명한 방향 속에 있다. 그래서 십자가를 지고 나를 따르라는 말은 고난 가운데서도 하나님을 향한 마음을 바꾸지 말라는 뜻이다.
우리는 하나님께 고난을 없애달라고 말하지만 고난이 사라지면 사랑이 드러날 자리도 함께 사라진다. 사랑은 반짝이는 순간 속에 머물지 않는다. 모든 것이 무너지고 아무도 남지 않은 자리, 더 이상 버틸 수 없다고 느끼는 그 자리에서 비로소 온전히 드러난다. 고난은 사랑의 적이 아니다. 고난은 사랑이 자신을 드러내는 자리다.

What is above reveals what is below, and what is below reveals what is above. Love reveals suffering, and suffering reveals love. Just as light becomes clearer through darkness, love is seen more clearly not in places where it is beautifully understood, but in places of suffering where it cannot be understood. When it remains in pain where no one is left, when it does not leave in the end, that is when love is finally revealed.
The essence of love is not emotion, but connection. Has it been broken, or has it not? The nature of suffering is separation, so relationships collapse and people leave. In the end, one is left alone. Yet even in that darkness, to remain in the same direction, to stay until the end. In that moment, the unbroken connection is revealed.
The cross is the place where God’s unchanging love toward us is revealed in the lowest and most shameful place of suffering. Not changing direction even in suffering that cannot be understood, remaining in the suffering that could be ended by leaving. Like a parent who does not let go of their child even in the midst of war. Love is not a condition, but a decision of direction.
Even when it cannot be endured, God still stands toward us. Not giving up or cutting off depending on circumstances. The love we receive always has a clear direction. That is why “take up your cross and follow me” means not changing your heart toward God even in suffering.
We ask God to take away suffering, but if suffering disappears, the place where love is revealed disappears with it. Love does not remain in shining moments. It is fully revealed in the place where everything collapses, where no one is left, where it feels impossible to endure any longer. Suffering is not the enemy of love. Suffering is the place where love reveals itself.
