끝을 끝내다
End the End
사과가 나무에서 떨어졌다. 아직 수분이 가득해 살아 있는 듯 보이지만 곧 시들 것이다. 이것은 자연의 섭리이며 피할 수 없는 결과다. 받아들이는 것 외에는 할 수 있는 일이 없다. 억지로 다시 붙인다고 연결되지 않는다. 한 번 떨어진 사과는 더 이상 나무의 생명을 누릴 수 없다. 끝을 아는 뻔한 이야기, 이미 끝난 이야기다.
아무리 해도 바꿀 수 없는 결론 앞에 서 본 적이 있는가. 노력이 의미 없는 것이 아니라 노력 자체가 닿지 않는 종류의 벽이다. 누가 얼마나 간절하든 얼마나 자격이 있든 상관없다. 문은 닫혀 있고 그 결정은 우리 손에 있지 않다. 우리는 모두 처음부터 문 밖에서 시작된 존재였다.
성경이 말하는 죽음이 그렇다. 죽음은 떨어진 사과처럼 하나님과 끊어진 상태이며 이미 그렇게 판결 난 결과다. 아무리 노력해도 더 나아지려 해도 다시 나무에 붙을 수 없는 상태다. 그것은 방향의 문제가 아니라 결론의 문제다. 죄의 삯은 사망이라는 말씀처럼 이미 끝나 버린 이야기다. 누구도 그 결론을 스스로 바꿀 수 없다.
그런데 하나님이 그 끝을 바꾸셨다. 예수님의 긍휼로 그 판결을 뒤집으셨다. 끝난 이야기 위에 다시 살아난다고 쓰시고 죽음을 예수님의 부활로 깨뜨리셨다. 하나님과의 단절은 더 이상 끝이라 불릴 수 없다. 그래서 바울은 외친다. 사망아 너의 승리가 어디 있느냐. 이제 죽음은 더 이상 자랑할 수 없고 마지막이라고 말할 수도 없다. 죽음은 여전히 존재하지만 유일한 결론이 아니다.
우리가 이룬 것도 아니고 알아낸 것도 아니다. 하나님이 끝을 바꾸시는 선택을 하신 것이다. 끝을 끝내신 것이다. 우리는 더 이상 죽음으로 당연하게 끝나는 존재가 아니라 다시 살아날 수 있는 존재가 되었다. 결론은 바뀌었고 우리에게는 길이 생겼다. 사과가 다시 나무에 붙을 수 있다는 말이 믿기지 않는 것을 안다. 지금은 보이지 않기 때문이다. 그래서 우리에게 요구하시는 것은 믿음이며 이것이 하나님이 말씀하신 승리다.

An apple fell from the tree. It still looks full of moisture, almost alive, but it will soon wither. This is the order of nature, an inevitable outcome. There is nothing to do but accept it. Forcing it back onto the tree does not restore the connection. Once an apple has fallen, it can no longer share in the life of the tree. It is an obvious ending, a story already finished.
Have you ever stood before a conclusion that cannot be changed? It is not that effort is meaningless, but that there are walls effort cannot reach. No matter how desperate you are or how deserving you may be, it makes no difference. The door is closed, and that decision is not in our hands. We all began outside that door from the start.
This is what the Bible calls death. Death is like a fallen apple, a state of being cut off from God, a verdict already given. No matter how much we try or how much we improve, we cannot return to the tree. This is not a matter of direction but of conclusion. As it is written, “the wages of sin is death,” a story already ended. No one can overturn that outcome on their own.
But God changed the ending. Through the compassion of Jesus, He overturned that verdict. Over what was already finished, He wrote life again. He shattered death through the resurrection of Jesus. Separation from God can no longer be called the end. So Paul cries out, “O death, where is your victory?” Death can no longer boast, nor can it claim to be the final word. Death still exists, but it is no longer the only conclusion.
We did not achieve this, nor did we discover a way. God chose to change the ending. He ended what had already ended. We are no longer beings destined to end in death, but those who can live again. The conclusion has changed, and a way has been made for us. It is hard to believe that an apple could be reattached to the tree. We cannot see it now. That is why what is required of us is faith, and this is the victory God has spoken of.
