다시 주어진 선택
The Choice Given Again
선택은 언제나 비선택을 만들어낸다. A와 B 앞에서 A를 선택했다면, 우리는 동시에 B를 선택하지 않음을 선택한 것이기도 하다. 그래서 선택은 항상 또 다른 선택을 포함한다.
선만 있다면 선은 드러나지 않고, 악만 있다면 악도 악하다고 할 수 없다. 독재자가 혼자 후보로 나선 투표에서 선택이라는 자유가 성립되지 않듯, B가 없다면 A를 선택하는 것 역시 의미를 갖지 못한다.
사람은 칼을 잡아 무기로 사용할 수도 있고, 잡지 않음으로 선과 사랑을 드러낼 수도 있다. 문제는 칼이 있느냐 없느냐가 아니다. 선택은 비선택으로 더 선명해진다. 그러나 우리는 그 선택의 기준을 하나님이 아닌 스스로에게 두었다. 하나님이 선이 아니라, 내가 선이 되려 한 것이다.
하나님과 단절된 이후, 우리는 더 이상 스스로 생명을 선택할 수 없는 존재가 되었다. 생명이신 하나님과 끊어져 비생명이 된 우리에게 죄의 삯은 사망이라는 결론만 남았다.
그러나 예수님의 대속으로 우리의 끝은 다시 열렸고, 선택은 다시 주어졌다. 예수님은 말씀하신다. 나는 부활이요 생명이다. 내가 곧 길이요 진리다. 나를 따르라. 우리는 은혜로 다시 선택할 수 있게 된 것이다.
우리는 선악과 앞에서 실패했다. 그러나 그 선택의 본질은 선과 악이 아니었다. 하나님이냐, 아니냐였다. 예수님의 대속으로 그 선택이 다시 우리 앞에 놓였다. 예수님이냐, 아니냐. 선택은 다시 우리 앞에 놓여 있다.

Choices always create non-choices. If we choose A over B, we are at the same time choosing not to choose B. Every choice therefore contains another choice within it.
If only good existed, good would not be revealed. If only evil existed, it could not even be called evil. Just as a vote with only one candidate cannot truly be called a free choice, choosing A has no meaning if B does not exist.
A person can take a knife and use it as a weapon, or choose not to take it and reveal goodness and love. The issue is not whether the knife exists. A choice becomes clearer through what is not chosen. Yet we placed the standard of that choice not in God, but in ourselves. It was not that God was no longer good, but that we tried to become the standard of good ourselves.
After being cut off from God, we became unable to choose life on our own. Separated from God, who is life, we were left with only one conclusion: the wages of sin is death.
But through the atonement of Jesus, our end was opened again, and choice was given once more. Jesus says: I am the resurrection and the life. I am the way and the truth. Follow me. By grace, we are able to choose again.
We failed before the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But the essence of that choice was never between good and evil. It was God or not. Through the atonement of Jesus, that choice now stands before us again. Jesus or not. The choice is once again set before us.
