World Refugee Day is observed every year on June 20. It was established by the United Nations to honor the strength, courage, and resilience of refugees who have been forced to flee their home countries due to conflict, persecution, or natural disasters.

Established: 2000 by the UN General Assembly

• First Observed: June 20, 2001

Coincides with: The 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention

• Purpose:

Raise awareness about the plight of refugees globally

• Promote empathy and understanding

• Advocate for refugee rights and inclusion in host countries




Themes


Each year has a theme. For example:


2024 Theme: “Hope away from home” – focuses on the right of refugees to seek safety and rebuild their lives.




Current Global Context (as of 2024-2025)

Over 110 million people worldwide are forcibly displaced.

Major refugee-producing countries include Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Sudan, and Venezuela.

Hosting countries include Turkey, Iran, Colombia, Germany, and Pakistan.
