The Dead Sea Resort

by Andrew Oh

The Dead Sea Resort usually refers to the tourism areas along the shores of the Dead Sea — the hypersaline lake lying between Israel and the West Bank on the west and Jordan on the east.

These resorts are popular for their unique climate, therapeutic mud, and the rare experience of floating effortlessly in dense saltwater.

1. Location & Access

Israel side: Ein Bokek and Ein Gedi are the main resort clusters, south of Jerusalem (~1.5 hours by car).

Jordan side: Sweimeh and the Dead Sea Marriott/Mövenpick area, about 45 minutes from Amman.

Altitude: ~430 meters below sea level — the lowest land point on Earth.

2. Unique Features

Hypersaline water: ~30% salinity (about 8–10× seawater) — so buoyant you can float without effort.

Mineral-rich mud: Used in spa treatments for skin health, arthritis, and relaxation.

Dry, oxygen-rich air: Beneficial for respiratory conditions; year-round sunshine.

No aquatic life: Too salty for fish or plants, hence the name “Dead Sea.”

3. Activities

Floating in the Dead Sea (limit time in water to ~15 min at a time).

Spa & wellness treatments using local mud and salts.

Hiking nearby nature reserves like Ein Gedi or Masada.

Visiting historical/archaeological sites along the shores.

4. Travel Notes

Best season: Spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov); summers can be extremely hot.

Safety: Avoid getting water in eyes/mouth — it stings severely.

Conservation: The Dead Sea is shrinking due to water diversion from the Jordan River and mineral extraction, so eco-awareness is part of most resort messaging.
