Comment on Will Smith’s Slap
I “was” a big fan of Will Smith. He was my Genie. However, his action at the 2022 Oscars disappointed me and I turned him away. Of course, I understand why he climbed the stage and slapped Chris Rock because he felt humiliated by Chris Rock’s insensitive remarks. I will also take offense when I hear someone make fun of my family, even if it is banter between friends. However, Smith did not show “a fierce defender of his family”. He should have dealt with the ill-mannered joke more wisely and showed dignity as a reliable actor, a husband of an ill wife and a father of three children. An hour later, he won his first Oscar for his lead performance as Venus and Serena Williams’ father. If I were him, I would have kept my temper at that moment and complained officially to Chris Rock or Oscars during a break or after the show. He could have written his complaint and comments on Rock's remarks via social media. His intention to protect his wife was understandable, but violence, in any case, must not be the proper means. As the saying goes, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.
