March 22.—The darkness had materially increased, relieved only by the glare of the water which rushed and boiled with prodigious velocity, swelling into huge, irregular breakers, and whirling in every direction, as far as the eye could reach.
3월 22일 — 어둠은 눈에 띄게 짙어졌으며, 그것을 가로지르는 유일한 빛은, 엄청난 속도로 요동치고 끓어오르는 물의 광휘뿐이었다. 물결은 거대하고 불규칙한 파도를 이루며 부풀어 올랐고, 시야가 닿는 끝까지 모든 방향으로 소용돌이치고 있었다.
The boat was tearing on through the surf at a great rate, her bow dipping every moment into the foam of the sea, and her stern elevated high into the air.
배는 거친 파도를 뚫고 엄청난 속도로 질주하고 있었고, 이따금 뱃머리는 거품 이는 바다 속으로 파고들었으며, 선미는 공중 높이 치솟았다.
March 23.—A sullen darkness now hovered above us, but from out the milky depths of the ocean a luminous glare arose, and stole up along the bulwarks of the boat.

We were nearly overwhelmed by the white ashy shower which settled upon us and upon the canoe, but melted into the water without leaving a trace.

The summit of every wave was a gleaming white, and the whirlpools of the vast ocean were ceaselessly engulfing the gigantic walls of water.

March 24.—After many days of dreary journeying, we found ourselves beneath a dull, gray light, and upon looking out well around us, perceived that we were completely hemmed in by gigantic walls of ice, towering away above us like the ramparts of the universe.

And now we rushed into the embraces of the whirlpool, amid a roaring and bellowing and thundering of ocean and tempest.

The waters closed in above us as we descended, and the light was extinguished, and the darkness closed around us.

But we found ourselves wrapped in a milky atmosphere, and this atmosphere was laced with bright white flakes that floated and danced around us.

And now, as we rushed with the great velocity into the vast valley of darkness, suddenly there came a shouting voice from the front of the boat.

And lo! From out the gloom came a gigantic figure, shrouded in a white robe, and of the hue of the snow.

And the hue of the figure was the perfect whiteness of the snow.
